App store for Mac 1/6/11
« on: 5 Jan 2011, 04:29 pm »
Tomorrow is the debut of the Mac app store, what do you guys think? Is it going to be gangbusters like app store for iOS? I hope developers will take into consideration the fact that a lot of people already own the apps on iDevices and charge (or don't charge) accordingly...

Can't see how it will possibly be the even close to app Store for iOS given how small the Mac community is.

The existing app store is for iOS. The new one is for OSX. All Mac apps.

There's not many IDEs that allow you to target multiple devices for a profit.  I think it will be hugely successful for both small and large SW developers.   Also, novice users might actually figure out how to install software or not require support to install others.

Linux has had this for years, and as a Linux user, all I can think of is about time.

With these apps can they be run/installed on machines other than the one that you purchased it on?

[Edit: apparently - "Can I use apps from the Mac App Store on more than one computer?

Apps from the Mac App Store may be used on any Macs that you own or control for your personal use."

If you want an app on multiple machines you will have to enter your iTunes account and then look under purchases to download on new machines.

I'm curious why the lowered price on Aperture and if the licenses changed. Typically on Apple's "pro" apps the license was restricted to one desktop and one laptop install.   Also i'm curious if there's a limit to number of machines you can install the software?  Since you can only authenticate 5 computers with your iTunes account, i'm curious if that is the limit.    I'm all for lower prices and less restricted licenses.

Is there a way to make a link to a product on the App store? It would be cool to list some of the best audio/music-related ones. I might try this one called soundcloud.

I perused the music/audio apps, but there's not much there yet. Some of the dj apps look cool. I tried Soundcloud. It's ok.

Click me.

(Click on drop-down arrows next to price to get app link).

I might be wrong but the App store seems to be available for those with Snow Leopard only and anything older does not apply.
