Suggestions please
« on: 4 Jan 2011, 06:03 pm »
I have just finished my dedicated room. It is a attached single garage that has been converted,
There is new 2x4 walls in front of the existing walls with batt insulation, new wood sub floor sitting on existing concrete with R-20 batt. demensions are 13'-6" x 24'-6" x 8'-2"high. There is a stairway at the back of the room about 19' with a 46" pony wall in front. The ceiling is heavy texture and the carpet is plush with a heavy underlay.
I brought my OBs down and placed them.....they sound terrible. The bass is muddy, the mids are
not bad, the highs are lifeless. There is a hugh amount of reflection off the front wall where the equipment sits. The room they came from(living room) is untreated has a bunch of glass covered pictures, throw rug on wood floor, slanted......from 11' to 8' ceiling that is almost all glass. They
sound very good in this room....I thought with the rug and textured ceiling in the new room it would be the other way around.
I brought my arrays in for a comparison, they sound very nice in this room.....there are bass nodes and the highs are bright....this is what I was expecting, but they sound much better than the OBs...they never have before.

So can you guys give me some advice on how you would treat this room for my OBs?
I am going to go the DIY route I am capable of building ....I built every speaker in the room.
Thanks for any guidance you can offer.

Here are some pics with the OBs and the arrays.

Hi Perry, nice room!

This is what I have in my room;
Corner bass traps in 2 corners (2 ea 4' high triangular (24" face) made of 8lb rockwool), 1 corner 2'x4'x4" 8 lb rockwool.

First reflection points 2'x4'x2" 703 rigid fiberglass

Wall 3' behind my head 2'x4'x2" 8lb rockwool (with the distance between your head and the rear wall diffusion would probably work better from what I have read)

Front wall between speakers 1 each 6'x8' parabolic diffusor with 2'x4'x8" 8 lb rockwool behind it

Best sound to date however I still need to make it asthetically pleasing plus I will probably experiment with absorbtion at the corner/ceiling convergence point.

Well.....not many suggestions....

But the ones I recieved......I went with......translates to "Thanks Ed"

I built the panels, placed them at the first reflection points, built the traps placed them in the corners.
Each time I placed a panel I would listen and see what I thought before I placed the next.
I was happy with each, until I placed the ceiling panel.....ths one I'm still not too sure of.
I took Eds (ebag) advice and built a round panel like he has and placed behnd the gear as a diffuser.
This really made a big improvement.....moved the sound stage further back and added a sparkle.

I guess the next step will be measurements.....this will be a learning process for me, I'm looking
forward to it though. Its nice to be able to come to a site like this know there will be people that will walk me through the process.

Don't have anything to add but just wanted to congratulate you on a beautiful job with your room.  Love your centerpiece.

Angle the V1's to point directly at your listening position.  See how that sounds.  On the other hand, some speakers just sound better than other speakers in some rooms.

The poly diffuser behind the OB speakers and bass control in the corners is a good t hing.  Personally, I prefer diffusion at the ceiling reflections but nothing wrong with absorbing them if that's your cup of tea.

Can't really see the back of the room to see what else might be appropriate.

and would those go horizontal to your line of site to the speaker?

This is what I end up doing every time I start moving the speakers around for the best sound.  In my small room imaging improves quite a bit with a substatntial toe in.

Best,

I recently toed in my speakers so they are pointing directly at me.  With absorption on the side walls, this made an improvement to the sound in my room.

Kind regards,
Tom

I have found that toe in about 2" has worked the best for me. That translates into pointing about a foot
away from each ear.....but I think in the next few weeks as I tweak that may change.

I placed the 2 side panels and front panel and listened like this for a couple of weeks. The room was
lively and the change was nice, it brought out a realistic "tone" to the music and vocals. I was happy
but I seemed to loose some depth to the soundstage but not width. After installing the poly diffuser
the depth increased to better than it had ever been, and the "sparkle" (?) came back to the room,
it was just the best the system had ever sound. The placement of the ceiling panel seemed to take some height away and I dont think its staying, would a poly diffuser work on the ceiling as well? If so
what would be the best orientation? and size?.....or would something different work better.

The back of the room continues about 8' and opens to a small staircase.....this back wall is where I think the ceiling panel will end up......I'm thinking with a couple of narrower panels flanking it.

All and all the changes in room performance is far exceeding what I ever expected, my OBs are just singing now.

Thanks!

Depends on how the room is laid out and what you're trying to accomplish, how severe the angle of toe in is, etc.

On the ceiling, in my opinion, something more like a QRD type of diffuser would work better.

Suggestions are nice and may offer some hint but all rooms are different. You have two choices, one do it by ear or by measurement.
If it were me I would consult with Bryan, pay a fee  and live happy ever after.
