Hi All,
Not sure if this is the right place to post this,mods please remove if not....

I don't post much(obviously! ),tend to just read all the more and more informative posts as the membership climbs.......... 

However,here's something I felt compelled to post. The Ovation Channel is running the Firefly series this week only until Sunday,apparently. Firefly was the second to last Network endevor for Joss Whedon. It was run on the Fox Channel on Friday nights and was never supported and summarily cancelled after one season of being incredibly mishandled(Fox:evil:,really:duh:,go figure )
Anyways,this is a blend of Western and Sci-Fi with depth and an amazing cast and all the smart ass dialog and references that Joss is known for.
One of my favorites for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!   

The movie "Serenity" was based on this series,but not nearly as well fleshed out or as interesting. FYI,while Firefly was on Fox,it had much more Chinese language spoken compared to the movie,due to the network censors either not having Chinese translators or not caring,Joss and his merry band were able to use up to date(for the time) Tiawanese street slang(curses) in the dialog. I have no idea if this is true(as I don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese),but makes for one fine Whedon story.

Anyways,not everyones cup of tea,and can take a few viewings before it grows on you.

I watched Firefly over the past week or so, via Netflix (where it's available for instant download via your pc).  I didn't find it instantly appealing.  But after a few episodes, I was completely hooked.  Apparently, Fox canceled the show before the first season had even finished airing, which is a terrible shame.  While most television shows seem to live way past their useful life spans, this one was snuffed out prematurely.

Once I'd watched the series, I desperately turned to Serenity (also instantly Netflix-able).  I thought it was a surprisingly good movie, but not enjoyable in the same way as the series.  It had a beginning, and an end, and a middle that was full of all sorts of thrills.  But it didn't really satisfy the cravings that the series had inspired.

How would I describe Firefly?  Take equal parts of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, the original Star Trek series and The X-Files, and mix thoroughly.  Tone down Kirk's bravdo, Will Munny's drunkenness, take the stick out of Scully's ass and put them all on the wrong side of the law.  That would give you a pretty close approximation.

I liked it.

Funny, I just finished watching this series, which was delightful and I  was totally hooked and then  really angry that "they" stopped it. I can't believe the mentality that will invest so much and make a good series and then just drop it; presumably because the ratings were "low". There are other examples of this really crass mentality; "New Amsterdam" comes to mind. It met the same fate. Other ones, like 24 Hours, which are totally manipulative and numbing, just get to churn on forever. Rant...

Hey there Wolfman, good taste imho. 

Never caught it on Fox, but did watch it on Sci-Fi before Comcast dumped me with the box requirement. As with most of what I've seen of Whedon's offerings it was a nice mix of humor and action. Nathan Fillion, the Capt., has carried a fair bit of that humor over to the ABC network offering of Castle. Morena Bacarin, makes the aliens of V (also ABC) pretty easy on the eyes as well. Not my cup of tea as a show, but she is.

Picked up Serenity not long ago for the library, as a used DVD. Can't speak to the slang item, don't remember enough of the specific series broadcasts. I thought the cast had a good chemistry, mix of newcomers or relatively unknowns, and your basic working supporting actors (Glass & Baldwin) . Definitely a fun watch. Seems I've seen the series pkg available now, will probably pick it up eventually.

If sci-fi and it's variants are your cup of tea, this is a fine offering. As noted, given the available viewing faire this was cut down well before it's prime.

Poor marketing by Fox.  I never heard of Firefly until this thread.  If I had known it was a Joss Whedon production I would have definitely checked it out and probably programmed my DVR just to be sure I did not miss a minute of it.

Joss missed the boat with Fox by using real people. He probably could have sold a decade of animated Firefly no matter how tasteless, stupid, or offensive it was.

Firefly was one of my favorite shows.  It's a shame the network never gave it a chance.  Odd that it didn't get picked up by Sci-Fi (or SyFy now ) or some other network.  A classic show, cut down before it ever had a chance to find it's audience.

I had never heard of this show until a few years ago. A friend of mine talked it up so much that I went out and picked up the box set. The rest is history...I love and miss this show terribly...and I also loved Serenity. I was really hoping a grass roots movement of sorts would really get enough people on board to justify a continuation of this series in some shape or form, but so far no luck

It's nice to see that there's still fans out there. The show had so much potential and was incredibly mishandled by Fox. They wouldn't even let Joss run the planned pilot as the first show,IIRC the train robbery was run first and people were just dumped in the middle with no character background or plot explanation. Well done,Fox,just bloody well done


Ajzepp-I was hoping for that as well,but unfortunately Dollhouse kind of killed any chance of seeing any work of Joss on T.V. in the near future. Hope I'm wrong

I love Firefly. Definately a cut above. Just buy the set of DVDs on eBay.

I gave dollhouse a chance, but not much of one. Same guy who turned me on to Firefly told me that Dollhouse actually got a lot better, so maybe I'll revisit it at some point.

The characters and constructs in Firefly/Serenity were just SO damn good...and the dialogue was top notch. I forget the name of the character, but the episode where the guy in the red suit came aboard the ship and took everyone down was just a fantastic story. That was definitely my favorite episode...in fact, I can't wait to see it again.
