Jimbo, you have got to be kidding (to me).  I'll give you my top choice at the moment; Bella Bartok Les Quatuors- Quatuor Vieg (Astree).  Just beautiful sound and depending on the volume control I am amongst the players or a few feet in front of them.  Very intimate, life size, and alive.  Thanks.

If I was stuck on a desert island with a nice system and only FIVE items, those are the five chosen items. I chose items I can listen to over and over and over...
and never get sick of.
I could easily choose more music, but five it is.

Stuck on a desert island with 5 recordings? Very simple...

One on how to make a sail boat out of desert island materials
One on how to sail
One on how to navigate
One on survival skills while building said sail boat
And one on survival skills while sailing - pretty sure the open sea won't be easy

But I'll play along and never get off the island...

Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Pearl Jam - Vs.

Pretty tough to come up with only 5.  Didn't want to cheat and use box sets or greatest hits albums.  Metallica's Ride the Lightning was the first and easiest choice.  Master of Puppets has a few songs that ate better than anything on Ride, but there's a few tracks I skip on it.  There's not a single track I ever skip on Ride.

With only 5 albums to bring, forget sound quality!  Then again, sound quality has rarely if ever determined what music I buy.

Well the first choice would be an instructional CD on - How to make beer from native vegetation.

Then for music -

Jennifer Warnes - The Well
Ray Montford - Shed Your Skin
Schubert - Sym. #9 in C major
Beethoven - Piano Concerto #5 "Emperor"
John Gregorius - Heaven and Earth

I agree with Elizabeth in that the five would have to be complex and intellectually stimulating pieces to keep from getting bored.  You didn't mention whether there is any food or water on this island so it could be a moot point.  Anyway, here goes:

Beethoven-Symphony in D minor #9-NBC Symphony Orchestra-Arturo Tocaninni and the Robert Shaw Chorus 1952

Beethoven-Symphony in D minor #9-Philadelphia Orchestra-Eugene Ormandy-The Mormon Tabernacle Choir-1973

Beethoven-Syhmphony in D minor #9-Berlin Philharmonic-Wilhelm Furtwangler-Bruno Kittel Choir-1942 remastered 1990.

Beethoven-Symphony in D minor #9-Cleveland Orchestra-Christoph Von Dohnanyi-Cleveland Chorus-1991

Beethoven-Symphony in D minor # 9-Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus-Otto Klemperer-2010.

Memorizing every note and deciphering the subtle and nuanced differences in these interpretations would keep me occupied for the rest of my natural life :D.

I have a beautiful wife and daughter at home.  If they could come and we'd all be content, that would certainly change things a bit.
