Any new post to the original topic would send that topic to the top of the Recent Updates (default) list.  If the person is logged in, the icon to the left of the topic title would also indicate whether it had been previously read or not.

thanks for the tip steve, hope i didnt inconvenience you terribly. my new years resolution this year is to try to be a better person. after reading your first response to my post i think i should concentrate on sarcasm
