FLAC on iPod Touch
« on: 27 Dec 2010, 10:49 pm »
I noticed that there is now a $9.99 app for sale that apparently allows FLAC to play on the iTouch.

As I recently purchased an iTouch (1g) I am on the hunt for ways to leverage my 800G FLAC collection, rather than reripping some of my tunes in Apple Lossless.

Anyone here tried that app?

You wouldn't have to re-rip to have your files in ALAC...freeware programs like Max will convert them in a batch process with no audible penalty whatsoever. Let run before you go to bed and let it do its thing while you sleep.

Only reason not to would be if you really need your library in FLAC for some particular reason.

Thx Toka, that is awesome to know!  My question to you is when you convert to ALAC does your music library end up having two copies of evey song/file > flac and alac or just alac. Im guessing just the alac will be there. Also do you know if AIFF is better then ALAC as well as which ones takes up more room.

Thx!

I have and use Max.  The only issue with it is that it doesn't really like large batch processing.

If you use iTunes to convert the files, the converted files will be copies of the original files and will require extra hard drive space to be available for the converted copies.

Although there may be some third party conversion programs that will allow on-the-fly automatic deletion of the original files, I would personally feel safer being able to verify successful conversion and then manually deleting later.

ALAC files will take ~ 55% of the space of uncompressed AIFF or WAV files.

Thx Steve! This is prob why i'm a lil anti-apple. I got same amount of music as OP (820gig FLAC about) and deleting each extra song seems like slave labor wages. If Max don't like big batch processing , 9bux seems like a good deal. That is if the app is up to par, have to read the reviews.

I am currently retaining all my FLAC, for use with my Bolder SB3 in another system.

I am looking to use FLAC on the iTouch for more portable listening - ie not always outside the house, but with headphones in different rooms.

Thanks for the tip about converting to ALAC if that becomes something I will want to do - though I doubt it, I have a significant amount of music in FLAC, and have for many years now, so will likely stick with the FLAC for now.

It would make sense to have a set of files in MP3 for a portable player in any case. You can keep the FLAC for the main system, but for a portable with limited storage you can get a lot more music on it with MP3. You won't hear the difference coming from an iPod Touch.

If Max isn't working well for the batch conversion, you can try XLD ( http://tmkk.pv.land.to/xld/index_e.html )
or xACT ( http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/xACT-Download-3897.html )

They both you LAME for MP3 encoding.

Have fun.

Hey Mark,

Just curious if you've tried this out yet -- the flac player that is?

Not yet, but will investigate this week.

Was sidelined by my music server dying, and needed to replace that h/w, and play around with installing iPeng, prior to returning to this.

As the server is up and running again, I will try this, need a portable FLAC solution, and since I own an iTouch, I will have to buy this app!

Thanks for looking into this Mark, I look forward to your findings.

I am happy to report back, though in truth I am even more motivated to find an app that will allow me to stream FLAC to my iTouch.

I would love to not have to load music onto the iTouch, but simply leverage my wifi, if I could.

Plugplayer apparently can do this, but to date the reviews have not been overwhelmingly positive.

My FLAC is stored on another machine from the one I sync my iPod to, so it may be a WIP for a while.

This software allows you to stream audio over wifi from iTunes to an iPod touch used as a wifi speaker. You will need to buy and install Airfoil on your Mac for this to work:

Thanks for the ideas guys, great community at work here!

I don't own a Mac (can I say that here?), so I am more interested in VNC.

To clarify, I would install VNC server on my music server, and a client on my Touch, and then the FLAC would stream to the Touch when I connect it to the server via VNC?

Any issue (other than network bandwidth) in streaming WAV?  I have my music server setup to decode FLAC into WAV and then serve up via ethernet to my Bolder SB3 Squeezebox.
