Best albums you bought this year
« on: 27 Dec 2010, 04:49 pm »
This helps me cut through the fluff and find the good stuff.  What are the best  3 albums you bought this year ( they don't need to have been released this year)?  Any musical type, please keep it to 3...

I'll start:

I'm normally a good picture-poster but am having trouble while travelling with my iPad...All vinyl, BTW...

1. Elvis Costello: My Aim Is True. I would put this in as my entry for "Last Night An Album Saved My Life" a la Mojo magazine. Got me through some rough times when it was released, one song at a time. The MoFi reissue is flat, well packaged. I thought it was a bit noisy but realized that the sound is fantastic and that because absolutely no compression of any sort is used, I have to turn the volume up more than typical.

2. Field Music: Field Music [Measure] A double record from a great British band. This is their third and the first two are also great. Quirky pop reminiscent of the Kinks, XTC and others who place melody first. Well-produced.

3. Renaissance: Prologue. A great prog-folk band of yesteryear. This one is the old release. Like other members of AC (I would assume) I buy more music than I can possibly listen to. This one got on the list because of how frequently I found myself pulling it off the shelf for another go around.

So THAT'S where Elvis Costello got the "Almost Blue" album cover inspiration!

All the Neil Young stuff that came out this year on vinyl sounds awesome. First 4 albums reissue and the Live albums were done really well but I have to say LeNoise is outstanding. A lot of people either hated it or loved it but on a decent analog rig  :)

AJA Steely Dan
Court and Spark - Joni
Made in Japan - Deep purple

Loved em 30 years ago, still a thrill

All original issue vinyl in Mint condition from the bargain bin at CD Warehouse. I got lucky.

Elko - Railroad Earth
Difficult to categorize, closest would be jam-grass but so much more than that. Great live album.

Imaginary Diseases - Frank Zappa
One of the best of the recent releases from the vault of live FZ music...all instrumental from the Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka era, 1972.

Court Yard Hounds - Court Yard Hounds
The album that Sheryl Crow should have made...more California than country, despite being a spinoff of the Dixie Chicks.

This was tough! I defined "best" as- "gave me the most pleasure."

Mumford & Sons ~ Sigh No More

Wood Brother's ~ Smoke Ring Halo

Monster's of Folk ~ s/t

...that would be my definition as well...

A lot of stuff I've never heard of in this thread,  I'll have to get the samples going soon...  Thanks for the replies so far.

Keep'em coming! :D
