Impressive collection!

I am ashamed to confess...

- Close to zero iTunes songs (meaning purchased from iTunes)
- 7000+ songs from...
- 600+ albums out of which
   - about 450 are regular CDs that I ripped
   - about 80 are SACDs (I could only rip the CD layer obviously)
   - a bit less than 100 are high res downloads (24 bits and anywhere between 44 up to 192 Khz)
- 0 LPs

That is still enough for about 20 days of continuous play or a full month considering some sleep.

I have around 28,000 songs in FLAC on another machine, but only about 40-50 songs in lossless apple friendly formats - I recently picked up an iTouch I am using as a portable device (and eventually a remote for my Squeezebox), so I am doubling down formats at the moment.

I will look for a good FLAC to Apple Lossless converter that is free.

Definitely some impressive collections so far.  For those of you with such huge collections how on earth do you listen to it all or pick something to listen to?  Do you do a lot of random play or do you find that you end up listening to a small portion of your collection usually because you enjoy those albums so much or because they were so well recorded?

A valid question about listening through larger collections.

For sit down listening, I tend to live with 10% of my music, but for playing music in the background for pool playing or net surfing etc, I tend to let it wander.  That way I find the stuff I want to spend more time listening to, and the stuff I could do without...

For me, I'm around 1500 albums. Last count was around 15,500 songs.

To answer the above question.....

My really valued music I have on CDs (around 500)
Everything is ripped to an external hard drive, and backed up to DVD-Rs.
Most of my listening is done via a Notebook PC. I copied everything onto the notebook, then started listening to every song. If I didn't like it, I deleted it from the notebook. Took me about 18 months to make it through everything.

Now, I have a notebook full of stuff I really like, so it is pretty much on continuous shuffle.

Now that's impressive. Mine is just shy of 2 TB, about 80% lossless, 89,000 or so songs lasting 233 days. I also have about 2,000 LPs.

Don't use iTunes, but I have pretty close to 8000 CD's on my Sooloos.  I've segregated and put all 16/44 content on the Sooloos and all 24/96 and 24/192 content on the Naim HDX.  Only have about 100 or so albums in high res right now, but digitizing some of my favorite LP's and ripping my DVD-a collection in my spare time.  Still have about 5000 LP's with no intention of getting rid of vinyl playback.

Close to 500 CDs ripped to HD (AIFF). I can't give an accurate count as I don't keep the keyboard, mouse or monitor hooked up. The Mac Mini is used for music only so I hook up the monitor once a month or so to see what Apple has for updates.
It's for casual listening so I just search for something interesting or sometimes shuffle the entire library. I only ripped CDs I might listen to (about half my collection) to the HD. If I want to listen critically I will load the CD as my CDP sounds better than the Mac Mini to DAC.

Around 2400 cds. Every now and then I'll go through the collection and trade in the ones I rarely listen to.

I have about 25,000 songs,2500 albums.   I tunes tell's me its about  70 day's of listening.  I have only bought about 2 album's from I tunes. As far as  how I decide what  to listen to  I have various playlists    favorites, Sunday morning,   good sound quality.  But for around the house listening I just use random.  Good thing about random is I discover a lot of good stuff I haven't listened to yet      bad part I'm alway's running to see who does a song   so I can fav it.
