Any GASsers have heavy theater drapes?
« on: 23 Dec 2010, 02:00 am »
Guys, my newly-christened audio room has a bi-fold door that lead to my wife's TV room.  I am looking for maybe 6' wide drapes that I could hang on both sides of the doorway so I don't have to hear her damned commercials while I have my system cranked WAY up.    :nono:

Looking for a plain, medium to dark grey, no frilly crap, please.

Thanks,

'brick

congrats on the new listening room!!!!

I got my curtains from JCPenny as they have a ton on clearance online.. mine were $25 a piece.. and you can possibly have them delivered for free to a nearby RadioShack for pick up..

Would drapes really work that well for sound isolation in your case? Drapes will only reduce things by a handful of dB, so unless the commercial volume is already fairly low at your listening position, it probably won't do what you want. Since if your volume is really loud, she'd have to turn up her volume so she can still hear things. ???

Is there some way you could make the edges around the door more air-tight instead?

I agree with NekoAudio in that sealing the gap would be your best bet.  Perhaps a nice little portable wall?  Besides, if you can hear the commercials when your system is "cranked WAY up" - you just need to crank up WAY MORE.

If those options aren't available, and you want to "roll your own", you can buy raw upholstery and curtian fabric at Artistic Fabrics at 1234 North Lindbergh Boulevard, Saint Louis which is the shop within a shop at Jackman's Fabrics (same address)(front room Jackman's, backroom Artistic).  Also, Fashion Fabrics at 10508 Baur Boulevard, Olivette, MO specializes in purchasing overstock and partial end rolls.  Their selection is basically what ever they can get at the moment, but the prices are really excellent and they usually only buy the better stuff.

Ken, thanks so much for the references/

Obviously I can't won't ask her to move to her sewing room or turn her TV down, up, or off.  I might find my gear out at the curb.

Her TV is sitting in a unused fireplace, so I may pad the back of the fireplace cavity to cut down on the boominess.

Thanks,

I bought 2 pair of some fake suade black curtains at Wallyworld and a roll of batting. Stiched them together with batting in-between and they do help soften the sound. They are pretty heavy and I thought they would help more than they do but I will take what I can get. The wife if pretty understanding when I have the need to crank Nine Inch Nails but at least my curtains showed some effort... :D

How about headphones for either or both of you?  With an alternating schedule?   Isn't marriage a challenge?

I've thought about wireless headphones for her, but I am not sured she'll like 'em.  $200+ is kinda steep right now.  I built this room for audio so  they'll pry my Maggies from my cold, dead hands.
