How did I meet Bryston?
« on: 20 Dec 2010, 04:12 am »
Well. This is how I met Bryston. I used to work in a electronic repair shop helping a technician fixing TVs, vcrs, amplifiers etc. during my period of working there (4 years), I saw a lot of good amps most of them were "vintages" I learned a lot there with my boss. My boss always told me "We do not find good staff these days" all is "disposable" they last one year and after that you have to buy a new one. one day my boss said to me...Do you see that guy across the street? and I said sure!. Well that guy is crazy about his stereo system. one day this guy stopped in the store to talk to my boss and He started saying the brand Bryston. He was bragging that He got the best amp and He was very happy. Well this guy "all" the time that my boss or me saw him, He would start talking about Bryston this...Bryston that... at that time I had a Marantz 2238B receiver (very good). Well I ask my boss what is all this with Bryston? and my boss said: This guy has the "BEST" staff in his house. Since then, I always remember the name Bryston. I have had so many good receivers, amplifiers, integrated amplifiers that I lost count!. The same goes to speakers.
I have even build a lot of diy amps using the best parts that I could get or afford like: Mundorf caps, Black gate caps, custom made transformers, stepped potentiometers using 1% tolerance resistors etc. just in parts to build an amp would cost me around $600 usd.
I even build a Nelson Pass amp and preamp. The results were very pleasant. but, I could not stop there...not sir! one day I had a chance to buy a Bryston integrated amp (B60-R) and I took it!!! Well, now I know I have to put away my E-S-R meter, fluke Digital meter and analogue meter. Why? well, I do not need to build or try to build something good to please me anymore....Bryston just did it for me!!! :thumb:

and that is how I met Bryston! :green:

Since nobody here has bryston on the shelves I did a lot of reading over the years it took me to come up with the stash to buy it.
I like the look, the lack of frills, and the  robust construction, warranty,as well as having access to the people who make it.

I started with Rotel HT separates and the amp could not handle my speakers in a large room and so I picked up a 4BST and learned to appreciate the difference between entry level high end and high end

Lanchile,

your Boss once said "this guy has the BEST staff in his house".

what did your Boss mean by "BEST"? was it the warranty, the analog circuits of the Bryston amps, the reputation???

let us know why your Boss was convinced that Bryston is among the best to buy...

Very good question! and I DID asked him the same thing and He said the way these amp are made (analog circuits). They are build to last forever (warranty). and of course the sound quality. He explained to me that in his days (many years ago lol) Big companies used to build some good amps that these companies had "pride" doing these amps (like Bryston today). But you "RARELY" find a company these days that does this no matter what you pay or where you look. The same thing goes for cars. He had an old car (I do not remember brand) in pristine condition that he loved it so much.He also had an old fisher receiver that he personally "PICKED IT UP" from FISHER company here in New York, it is a wonderful receiver that He uses "EVERYDAY" and "NEVER" had a single problem, after so many years He replaced most of caps and clean the input selector, volume control and He said it will last for many...many years more.
I agree too. When I worked with him I saw very good "old" amps that were build very good and the sound was excellent. These old amps when they came for service they had so "simple" problems like: Noisy volume control, Bad solder joints. one that I still remember is a SANYO PLUS series with dual transformers and "gas" cooling system very well build. also some old HK twin power amps, Marantz 22XXB series (I had the 2238B). Today most is "disposable" you use it one year or two years and it goes to the garbage.
All this new staff with digital sound processors and all gadgets is not on my list.
I personally find Bryston a "reliable" company that I can trust and I can recommend to anyone that is looking for the pinnacle in audio. :thumb:

My Maggies needed a mate . Met a Bryston 4B and were engaged. Put in some Tara cabling and a marriage for 10 years. After 10 years the Maggies met an AR DR 250 Mk2 Servo. They dated and the Bryston left in a hurry. Then some time later the Maggies were calling out for the Bryston. The AR all flash and those big tubes courted the Maggies. In the end the Bryston Maggie combo lasted a very long time in our home.

During the holidays 16 years ago I walked into a stereo store that mostly concentrated on home theater to purchase my 1st pair of full range towers (Energy). At the time I was in high school and I had saved up some cash working a second job and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

During this visit the sales rep and I sat in their only 2 channel room for about an hour listening to a hand full of cd's via Bryston and BMW combo. My jaw dropped and I was in awe of what I was hearing. At the time the price scared the crap out of me although, fast forward 13 years and I purchased a 3bsst then quickly followed by the 7bsst2.

Wow, those 7bsst2 are monsters.  600 watts RMS at 8ohms you can blow your windows for sure. Right now I have the B-60R  integrated amplifier 60 watts RMS at 8 ohms and I am sure that I do not need more power than 60 watts. (speakers 90 db spl)  I believe this is "true power" like Marantz used to make in the  22xxB series.

I auditioned Bryston audio equipment towards the end of my audio quest. I did live in the Peterborough area at one time and I had never heard of Bryston at all - as well as many other major audio companies

The first Bryston component that I auditioned was the 14B SST. I ended up purchasing my speakers first as I could use them right away. My final choice of amplifiers was between Bryston and . I decided on my beasties and a BP 26 and had them on the shelf within 5 months. Next came the choice of a CD player and was between a BCD-1 and an CD player

The CD player came up on top and also landed on the shelf.

I am extremely satisfied with my Bryston amplifiers, speakers, CD player and speaker cables.

Truly awesome gear.

I first heard/saw Bryston about 15 years ago, in a shop called Clark Music in Latham, NY.  I just bought my first 'real' piece of gear rom my mentor in college - an NAD 304 integrated amp.  I went into Clark Music looking for a CDP and speakers.  They didn't have anything that I liked in my price range.  The guy was a great guy who was very happy to help out a new audiophile.  After discussing what I had and what I was looking for, he referred me to a competitor who had what ended up being my first 'real system' - NAD 523 CDP and PSB Century 100s.

After he steered me to the right place, he showed me what I should look for after college and a real job - Bryston.  Told me all about the warranty, build quality, studio pedigree, etc.  Then he told me the price.  I remember thinking I'd kick my own ass if I ever paid that much for a stereo.  Ah, to be young and stupid again...

The first thing I remember thinking was "That stuff's ugly!"  it was the pro series gear with Bryston written in huge letters across the front.  After about 10 seconds of the first track, I totally got it.  I wasn't as in love with McIntosh as I was before hearing the Bryston gear.

Fast forward 15 years...  Half way through my 2nd Master's degree, married, 1 month old daughter...  and I still can't afford a brand new full Bryston system.

No worries though, my B60 is better than anything I ever thought I'd own.  My system sounds far better than 99% of the stuff I've heard.  Most of that stuff costs multiples of what I've got.

After my wife and I buy a house, my daughter gets a bit older, and we have a good sized nest egg, I'll buy a brand new full Bryston system.  The B60 will never go away, unless of course it goes to my little one.  Maybe when she gets her first place, she'll get the B60, and I'll get that era's itineration of the BP-26 and 7BSST.

I became aware of Bryston when I needed a line preamp. (the.4,1998). The dealer said" built like a watch" After reading reports in Critical acclaim I went on to get a 4bst and then bp25. I have never looked back
By the way  I like that CENSORED ikon, good idea sometimes  .Cheers :xmas:

"... I remember thinking I'd kick my own ass if I ever paid that much for a stereo..."

Greetings Stu Pitt  :D

This is a great observation and I wonder how many of us have had this same thought from time to time.

Case-in-point, when I purchased my Marantz SR-19 receiver, it was around the $2K price range plus tax. At times, I would look at it and think; “wow, I paid $2K for this receiver.” Now please do not get me wrong, the SR-19 is a most excellent receiver and worth every penny of its purchase price as it is a great performer and has served the Laundrew household diligently for the last decade.

Now here is where the irony comes into play. I have never once, entertained a thought such as this with respect to my 2 channel system; even when you consider that its purchase price was multiples of my SR-19.

Be well...
