Magnepan MMG/Bryston 3B Question for James
« on: 19 Dec 2010, 01:25 pm »
Mr Tanner:
I was thinking of picking up a pair Magnepan MMG's at a good price, and was wondering if my 20 year-old Bryston 3B will be ok to drive them...
I ask  because I have heard that ribbon loudspeakers like Maggies can be really tough on the filter caps of an amplifier. :)
 Regards,
 Patrick

Hi Patrick

Contray to popular belief most Maggies are not true ribbons - they are planar-magnetic. They love high voltage swing and although they have moderately low impedances they are a very Resistive linear load. Long story short the 3B will be just fine on the MMG's

Thanks

Hi joey

Yes and in two rooms so far they sound different than the 1.6's so I am still adjusting at this point. Will save my comments till I more time with them.

James,
Similar situation, but I have a pair of 20 year old ST 3B's.
My question is can i run them in bridged / mono mode into a set of 1.7's?
The manual states 8ohm minimum , but the 1.7's  are such a "nice" 4ohm load.
Will the mono 3B's self destruct or just run a tad hot?

Hi Shawn

Yes they will probably run a bit hot but it should be OK as long as they do not shut down.
