Can't Copy Folder
« on: 19 Dec 2010, 01:14 am »
As a first time Mac owner (Mini) I am unable to copy a music folder to my HD from a stick because it has the same artist name, but is a different album.  What am I doing wrong ?  In windows it would recognize the difference.

If you are using iTunes, just have it import the files and it will copy it to the HDD for you and rename the file if it is properly tagged.

Thks, by import I assume you mean Add To Library, which does not do it, no import after 'Chose'.    And after working fine for several weeks I can no longer import any music files into iTunes, do you know why that would be ?

But I can add files to my HD, just this one with the same artist won't without deleting the original because it thinks it's a dupe.

iTune's won't import file formats it doesn't understand, so that's probably it.   Out of the box, iTunes will understand WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC, ALAC.  iTunes on Windows will convert WMA based on your import settings.   FLAC isn't supported yet even though there are plugins to enable it.  For a MAC, you can convert unprotected WMA, FLAC and other formats using various programs, I prefer Max (http://sbooth.org/Max/).

If that is not it, then make sure you have enough disk space and review your iTunes settings in the advanced tab.  Perhaps you don't have "Keep iTunes Media Folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library".    Since you are new to iTunes I would probably suggest you have both checked.  The only reason you don't want them check is that you also use another player and would prefer iTunes not to organize or move the files.

Yes it's a FLAC file, I should have thought of that.  I am using Ayrewave for play but would like to create playlists in itunes and import to AW.  However I do not see the two setting options you describe under Advanced ??

Importing from my HD into AW works fine.  I used itunes for several weeks when it was new and it too imported fine from my HD. I believe updates were done about the time the problem started.

But going back to my original question, do you know why my music HD cannot distinguish between the two Diana Krall folders, which are different albums, when I try to copy from my stick ?

thks for the help.

If you are coping a folder with a name that already exists, you might check that folder to see if it has both sets of files in there.  Otherwise, create a subdirectory with the album as the name. i.e. "Diana Krall/Love Scenes/" and try that.

Did not realize there are two Advanced, the first is checked. What is the Media Folder ?  If it's checked what does it do or stop ?

If you click the ? button at the bottom of any iTunes dialog box, it will give you context-sensitive help:

The Help will then tell you:

Keep iTunes Media folder organized:
Automatically put imported music into folders for album and artist.

Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library:
Copy an item to the iTunes Media folder when you drag the item to the iTunes window or choose File > “Add to Library.”

If you want items to appear in iTunes but also remain in their original location, deselect this checkbox. For example, you can keep music imported from CDs on your computer’s hard disc, and save your video files on an external hard disc.  Pressing the Option key while dragging temporarily reverses the current checkbox setting.
