Help. Computer thinks I am right clicking.
« on: 15 Dec 2010, 10:10 pm »
This is driving me crazy. I left click and the response is the right click options. How can I turn it off? I don't care if I never right click.

One question, what mouse are you using?

One Answer, System Preferences, mouse, uncheck "secondary click"

Congrats your right click is dead unless you hit ctrl-click.  :thumb:

I was using the new Mac mouse  without separate clickers, but switched to a Microsoft version. It does it with both mouses. I'll try what you suggest. The problem comes and goes, but has been coming more often and staying longer lately.

I think I went to system preferences to do this about a year ago, but it turned itself back on, apparently. The new Mac mouse doesn't seem to have a way to turn off the right click option or at least I didn't find it.  Thanks again.

Is it upside down.  I know. Dumb. But it has happened to me once

It should have the option under mouse in system preferences to disable right click. I have a new magic mouse and the option is there. If you have the older Mighty Mouse it may be different, but I seriously doubt it. Do a screen grab for me to see your mouse option menu.

hold command-shift-3 and then upload that to the photo gallery of your choice then post it.

Thanks,Pez. I no longer have the magic mouse. It met with an accident last night when it kept up the right click business.    My older wireless microsoft mouse seems to be working fine, now with the right click option turned off.  (I never did think the magic mouse was all that great.)  ( I don't think it was upside down. Both mice were doing it, so I think it must be some glitch in my Mac somewhere.)

Don't you just hate it when your electronics accidentally fall down the stairs? Maybe they wouldn't be so accident prone if they just did what they're supposed to do.   :P

Quite remarkably, with the right click option off in the systems preferences, it was doing the same thing again tonight. Clearly, there's is something weird going on with this Imac, and it is totally annoying.

System Preferences> Mouse

the only think I can think of is that for "secondary click" is switched to Left instead of the default Right.

I am using a Magic Mouse on an i5 iMac on 10.6.5

Just a thought, but if I hold my mouse with my thumb and middle finger to move the cursor around and then click using my index finger, (while holding the sides with my other fingers) it always right-clicks on me.

The right click is mimicked by holding down the control button and left clicking. So I suspect that one of your two control buttons on your keyboard is periodically sticking.

This problem continues and seems to be getting worse. I have turned off all right click options.  When it goes bad the left click registers a right click and the scroll wheel magnifies the image. All very annoying. I tried all the suggestions above, to no avail. Any other ideas out there or is my Mac just going bonkers?

This just might confirm that your Control key is periodically getting stuck.  After all zooming is accomplished by using the scroll wheel with the Control key pressed down.

What you could do is go into System Preferences, under Hardware choose Keyboard and Mouse,  then under the Mouse, uncheck where it says "zoom using scroll ball while Holding (Control)"

Then choose Keyboard and click on the bottom button that says Modifier Keys, and for the Control Key choose "No Action" from the menu.

That should solve the problem, but you won't have use of your usual Control Key functions, if you happen to use them.

Thanks, Markie, I'll give it a try.  Although, I have selected "none" for the right click "assignment" it still works normally.  Maybe the mouse is defective, but then the Apple Magic Mouse I had did the same thing.

I think he's referring to a sticky/defective ctrl key on your keyboard, as evidenced by the zoom feature when you scroll.

I am pretty sure it's not sticking but there's a chance that I've been leaning on it from time to time and thus creating the problem.  :duh:

But it still begs the question of why if I've turned off the right click functions in the System Preferences, it still works just the same as always.

Crimson has it. Randy in very short order you can be very sure if the Control Key is sticking/defective if you simply go into System Preferences, Keyboard and Mouse, Keyboard, Modifier, and choose "No Action" for the Control Key.

Then see what happens.  My bet is that the unwanted "right click effect" goes away.  Then of course re-enable the right click on your mouse so you can right click when you want.
