However, I think it's important that important news is disseminated to all drones at the earliest possible opportunity. Finally, a new 35/1.4:

Feel free to send me your 24/1.4, as you won't be needing that any more. Thanks ;)

That's a pretty pricey lens, especially for a short prime.  I'm starting to appreciate zooms all the more.

Your primes wil probably appreciate more than your zooms as well. (Or depreciate less, depending on how you look at it.)

Yeah, why?

It's sexier shooting those super fast, expensive primes, but after shooting primes, I appreciate zooms all the more.  :thumb:

Ha, Canon has had one of those for a while.  I don't have it but I hear it's pretty good.

Yeah, I know. But it's OK, it's about time Nikon catches up with Canon!  :green:

i use canon, with the canon 24-70 2.8 & 70-200 2.8IS they are not as sharp as my 50mm & 100 mm the colour balance is also slightly more yellow. just think of how many more glass it has to go through before reaching the sensor. i havent found a zoom lens that betters primes yet for dslrs.

the hassleblad h series 50-110 is just as good as the blad primes but that a $8,000 AUD lens.

Being out of touch keeps more money in your pocket!

I'm all for fast lenses. But I am starting to wonder about my use of an f1.4 with a 35mm. I try to shoot street images--nothing successful yet. I found the 35mm to be my preferred focal length for that. But for street and any travel/landscape wide images, it's likely that you want a bit more depth of field, so the f1.4 is not really needed.

I know the f1.4 would be great at isolating your subject but it more than likely would need to be a static object to be practical. also better for focusing of course. My counter-thinking....Candids or even posed portraits would be a bit awkward with a 35mm since you would have to be very close to get head and shoulders, even closer for just head. Furthermore, 35mm distorts features enough when shot close. Having looked in the past (flickr search) I have seen a couple of images with head and shoulders, but those are usually young kids, who usually look fine slightly distorted and don't mind having a camera 2 feet from their face!  I'm on an FX body so that requires me to be even closer--hard to get a natural expression when close. I currently have a 35 f2. never use it for close people shots.  The other benefit of that lens is that it is fairly low profile (For street)
in other news....I have my eye on an "old" 135mm f2 though!

the 35mm lens was Annie leibovitz fav. for her early work. great for full body portraits. I find the 85mm the best as anything above that flattens the perspective a bit too much for my liking.

But for a Nikon fanboy, he was pretty hard on the 35mm and even returned it.

I've been looking for a 35 mm Canon lens upgrade and considering the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L, which is ludicrously priced at around $1370, but this new Nikon lens pricing is BEYOND the L lens madness IMO

The point of having an f1.4 is not really to be able to use it. An f1.4 captures more light so that if you use f2.8, you won't get the lens distortion from the edge of the lens as you would on an f2.8 lens.

As with any lens, it is recommended not to use the aperture all the way open or closed.

Of course some lenses ARE designed to be used wide open. The Canon 85L F/1.2 is great wide open with that ultra thin DOF and beautiful bokeh.

If you're not going to use it wide open, save some money and get the 85 F/1.8.

Another useful reason to get fast lenses is even if you're stopping them down, when focusing you get the benefit of all that extra light which could be very useful in low light situations.

For a while, I had the rare Canon 50L F/1.0 and when asked how much better was it than say the 50L F/1.2, a good answer was, "it beats the hell out of it at F/1.0!"  :thumb: :thumb:

Yes, I didn't really follow that at all!

Now a crop body would not capture all that a 35mm format lens is capable of. Some people rationalize the benefits of crop bodies by saying that the extreme corners of the lens with the attendant distortion (usually) is left out and that's good. I shoot with a full frame body and I say give me everything the lens was designed for and *I'll* do the cropping.  :green:
