Speaker Search Ended
« on: 14 Dec 2010, 04:12 pm »
As some of you know, this past year I've been looking for speakers to replace my ADS L1290s that I've enjoyed for the past 24 years.  After alot of reading I narrowed my choices to several speakers to audition.  Because speaker preference is such a personal thing, I limited my choices to those I could actually hear in person.  I heard speakers by Magnepan, Usher, Revel, GR Research, Salk, and some DIY speakers.  Unfortunately, there were a couple models I would have liked to audition but couldn't.  Oh well, I guess I can't hear everything.

I'm very gratefull for the many forum members who answered my MANY questions and for those who opened their homes to offer an audition to a stranger.  I would particulary like to acknowledge the help of Jim and Dennis who showed great patience with me this past year.

So this morning I place my order for a pair of HT2-TLs in natural curly cherry, bullet shape spikes, and magnets on the rear to hold the grill when I want to expose the drivers. :singing: :hyper:

Now the really hard part.......waiting!  Jim said it would be about 45 days.

So now instead of many "which speaker" questions, I'll be asking many setup questions.  I guess I'll also need to find a good home for my ADS L1290s since I won't have room for both.

That's great. :eyebrows:  That is what my brother has, very nice clean look. And that RAAL tweeter is really special

Setup suggestion - Little or no toe-in

You'll have plenty of time to experiment. In another thread you were asking about depth, front to back. A little more toe-in will increase the depth, less will widen the soundstage. I have the HT3's and am surprised how much toe-in I ended up with. For 30+ years I have usually had little or no toe-in and that is how I started with the 3's, but it has changed. My brother too with his 2's. Ours would be a triangle with the axis meeting a few feet behind us.
In 45 days you be experimenting yourself.

Thanks.

I'm a bit puzzled by the sarcastic rolling eyes, though.

Saturn,

I guess that means how dare you even think about asking a setup question (you haven't actually asked any setup questions yet) without first searching for an existing thread on the subject!

Thanks.  Currently my speakers are toed in just enough to point to the seats on either side of me on the couch.  I may start with that then make adjustments from there.  With the offset tweeters on the HT2-TL I guess I also need to experiment with tweeters on the inside and outside.

I certainly don't mind using the existing thread for setup questions.  I had forgotten about that thread (I'd seen it some time back).  This thread wasn't intended as my own setup thread.  There have been many here who have helped me over the past year and I thought I would just share my decision.  I certainly didn't expect any  responses.

Gee, thanks guys.  I've never trashed anyone for asking a question.  The rolly eyes meant that the referenced thread may not be all that much help.

As a group I don't think we have that much experience with the effects of toe in on the RAAL version of the HT2-TL.

And there aren't going to be any hard and fast rules.  But it really shouldn't take much time to test which positioning sounds best in a particular room.

Thanks for clarifying that.  I've not read any post where you trashed anyone, which is why I was puzzled.  The rolling eyes usually denotes sarcasm, so that's the way it came across (at least to me).  I'm glad it was a simple misunderstanding.

We're good. :D

In my gallery there are a few pics of my HT2-TLs in cherry, mine are the 3/4 inch. I have heard both and they sound the same to me and those two inches mean a lot in my small room. Yes, 45 days is a long time but well worth it!

As Denis mentioned, there are not absolutes when it comes to positioning. I have the HT2-TLs with the RAAL that replaced the same speaker but with the LCY tweeter.

In different locations of the room, different toe-in provided the best results. As it stands now, I have minimum toe-in for the best results. What works in one's room may sound horrible in another.

When you get your speakers, just take some time to play with positioning. You might be quite amazed at what only an inch will do.

Regardless of how long it takes you to set them up, I am sure you will be very happy with the Salks. They are capable of amazing things when good upstream components are used.

One might be surprised what 1/8" will do.  In the Master Set placement procedure you move it that much between tests!  :duh:

You are right. Depending on the size of your room, 1/8" at the speaker could mean a few feet at the back wall and effect reflections considerably. I didn't want to scare anyone too much :duh:

Everybody's room is going to be different.
In my room, the HT2-TLs (LCY, no tweeter offset) are happy a few feet out from the front wall.  And I am using no toe-in.

I have a rather large room with my HT2-TLs on the long wall.  I sit about 14' from the speakers and they are 12.5' apart.  I found that only a little toe-in works best.  No toe-in results in a smeared center image, and too much results in a greatly reduced stage width.  However, there is a lot more than just imaging with speaker placement.  Over several months, I have dialed in the placement for my speakers and I won't move them until I change houses or speakers; neither change is even in my long range plans.

Congrats on your purchase!  :thumb:

I also don't have alot of space so Jim recommended the 3/4 inch MDF version.  He did say he didn't think there was any audible difference.  Glad to see that has been your experience as well.  Another benefit of the 3/4 inch version is that they should be easier to move.  I expect to being doing alot of that until I find the best position for them.

I read about that procedure; sound VERY tedious! :o  Maybe someday if I'm really bored I may give it a try.

I appreciate all the tips. :D
