Super Chunks with a twist
« on: 12 Dec 2010, 05:17 pm »
Wanted to get the opinions of the folks here of an idea I have for some bass traps. As you can see below, I've already built some flat 2'x7'x6" bass traps using OC703, also eight 2'x4'x4" wall panels for first reflections.
I put these together while I was running mono pole speakers, in a 11/6 x 15/6 x 8 room, but they are still unfinished sitting as you see them, in the attic. The room has a slight 45-degree cut at the wall/ceiling transition, thus the 7' trap height, instead of a full 8'.

I've since changed to Magnepan MMGs, and want to do something different. The 25-1/2" wide, 6" deep bass traps would have been big for the room to begin with, and would of encroach into the swing area of doors on the front and side walls.

So I thinking of going the "super chunk" route, but with a smaller 16" x 16" back side length, and a rounded front facing side, with some sort of reflective material added, similar to how ASC adds reflectiveness to their tube traps. Think of a pie cut in quarter slices. Will I get close to the same bass trapping performance as using the above panels (which are close to the size of the Magnepan MG20.1 models!). And what can I stick onto the 703 to add reflectiveness, that can bend along the curve, if I go that route?

Perhaps heavy plastic drop cloths or tarps?

16" with a rounded face is really not going to leave a lot absorption in the corner. Also diffusion is not really needed for the corners. All and all what you have built will kick some butt on the low end so I would keep them how they are. If you want to add diffusion then add it away from the corners.

16" x 16" back and side would get you about 22.6" of flat face, more surface width depending on your curve.  I'm not sure that the curve really gets you anything other then more square foot of cloth facing.

Thanks guys. I guess the first step is to throw these bass traps into the room "as is" and see what happens. The way my MMGs are placed into the room, part of the rear wave goes into the corners, thus the reason why I wanted some reflection or diffusion there.

Maybe I can try these traps with and without a thin membrane temporarily taped to the fronts, like plastic sheeting or paper?

Hi,
The rigid fiberglass with reflective-face (705)(SFK) that I bought was covered with a heavy "craft" type paper with a thin aluminum face on one side. For acoustic purposes, I don't think the aluminum matters. I'm pretty sure you could buy that heavy paper at a craft or art store.
If I had to do mine over again, I would not have bought the 705, but just the 703 and then covered with craft paper.

Your frames look nice! Are they routed out plywood? Are you planning to paint them? More pics please.

You can purchase the FSK separately if desired. It's flexible enough to work on the radius like you're describing and will attach via spray adhesive.
