Is the Ultraclock worth the difference ?
« on: 11 Dec 2010, 07:54 pm »
Well, is it worth the difference compared to the Superclock is what I would like to know ...  It is a BIG difference in price, and I would probably want waaaaaaaaaaaaay better sound to justify it.

Thanks

Sorry to burst your bubble but that ain't gonna happen, waaaaaaaaay better sound that is. Fact is when you reach a certain point, and everyone has a point that's called the point of diminishing returns, one has to ask themselves if they're willing to spend more money for small gains. There's an old saying that you can get 90% of really good audio for a reasonable cost but for really really great audio that comes from that last 10%, it's not gonna be cheap. And that pretty much sums up comparing the Superclock4 with the Ultraclock. I've had both in my Off-Ramp 3 and there's no doubt the Ultraclock is better, lower ground noise with deeper soundstage & more instrument seperation but it's not waaaaay better and to justify the extra cost really depends on deep pockets and how bad you want that extra bit of performance. Hell the same can be said for an external power supply, in my case the Paul Hynes SR3-12, as far as was it worth the extra $$$? My ears say damn straight while my wallet says  :finger: .   :thumb:

OK .... This is actually what I was looking for. I won't pay that kind of a difference for the incremental benefit. It would have to be jaw dropping difference to justify that for me, regardless of the depth of my wallet

To further convulete things other components can mask the sound picture. For example, if one has a basic entry level system the differences between a superclock and ultraclock might be quite difficult to detect whereas with a revealing system they would be more apparent. Some years ago I could hear no difference in my system when switching the factory supplied power cord to my amp with a very expensive third party one, yet the differences between the two cords when hooked to the amp in a friends megabuck system were profound!

How you made any comparisons between the Superclock 4 and the Ultraclock Paul?

No I have not. However my system is fairly revealing so I have no doubt the ultraclock would provide surperior sonics.

If you can hear significant differences in power and signal cables in your system you will  probably benefit from upgrades in the digital clock, and more then just slight increment changes also. Signal/power cables from your dac especially. If you do not then it might not be worthwhile as your system may not be sensitive enough. This isn't a bad thing by any measure.

Get the Hynes regulator upgrade first, then think about the Ultra...

After a LOT of testing of power supplies, regulators and cables, I have concluded that the clock is the most important thing.  Once the jitter of the associated circuitry is low, as in the Off-Ramp 4, the clock is it.
