any good ideas for diy tube storage

I'll soon have aprox. 20 12au7 tubes, need something to store them in, one place preferably with the ability to note what's what.

I like this idea, wonder if folks have tried anything else?

I like cardboard boxes. In a closet.

Tubes would be best if kept in a constant temp, no vibration, no bumping them around, environment.
So stick them someplace they cannot fall off a shelf, or get extreme temp changes. A box in a safe place where they can be left undisturbed is best.

I use tube boxes. Then you can write on them. Only problem with that is getting the right tube back in the right box (assuming you care that much).

I feel guilty after reading that link.   I salvaged a garbage bag full of tubes (mostly 12at7, 12au7, 12ax7, and 6l6's) from a local college dumpster and now they sit in my closet in a garbage bag banging around at will. :duh:

Tubedepot.com sells little white tube boxes.  I got some for my boxless tubes.  I write in the end what type of tube and manufacturer and store them end up in a toolbox.  Originally, I stored all my tubes and cables and cable making acc. in that box but after a few tube binges the cables moved out and into their own toolbox.

That DIY box in your first post is nice if you're going to travel or ship them overseas but it's quite unnecessary.  Tubes aren't as delicate as some believe.

Ahhhhh, didn't know you could buy replacement boxes, thanks. I bought a bunch from ebay, they came 'box free', so I was concerned about storing them.

Edit: Found them, 20 for $3, looks like a deal.

Saw that as well Mr. Xavier, but new white boxes, a shoe box and some polystyrene, and I'll be good.

Three more boxes of tubes arriverd today, I won another bid for 5 RCA cleartops, and still waiting on the Telefunkens from Turkey.

Hmmmm, I may have gone a little overboard on tube purchases.

Happens to all of us at some point.  My tool box is now full of tubes.  Some of the tubes in there I don't even have equipment for!  But you never know what you'll buy in the future so I keep the types I don't even currently use.  Does that make my tube buying even nuttier?

I got the blank whitebox tube boxes, and the shipping box also worked great as a storage box, I wonder if that was planned?

:thumb: A cardboard box with boxed tubes is fine. I have a box for the tubes (replacement/rolling) my amps and preamp use. Then there's a box of tuner tubes, then a box of 12AX-AT-AU7 varients. And it goes on and on.
