Piccolo problem
« on: 2 Dec 2010, 09:49 pm »
I've just completed a Piccolo and it will not power up.  I've had to substitute 9ohm resisters for 10ohm ones in R12,13,14 and 15 also I've not fitted a DC plug as I only want to use it with batteries.  Will this be the reason it's not working?

Thanks

Couold be any number of things gone wrong. You will need to check continuity in several spots. Are you getting power from the batteries to the board? Are the switches making contact as they are supposed to (i.e. do you have the locknuts in the right place on them)?

I would start there first, but without more infomation it would be hard to know more about your problem.

Yes, the Piccolo does not fire up without the DC plug in.  I had to figure that one out for myself.  I've built 3 of these great devices!!

You can solder a wire between the following PCB points:

Sorry about that.  I should put a note in the manual that mentions the DC jack (internal switch) is needed.

The Piccolo is now up and running, but with quite an audible hum.  This hum goes when I touch the case, does this indicate the case needs a separate earth?

You may need to scrape some paint or whatever to get a clean ground connection from board to case (i use nuts on both sides of the 1 inch screw).  Also, you can use a countersink to remove paint from corner cover holes.

The case isn't painted

You have to check your case ground path (and ALL parts of case too). In the original design the grounding is achieved by the ground post screw, protruding trough the upper plate and connecting the plate (with the remaining parts of the case) to the ground point on the PCB. The whole Piccolo grounded by output cables to the nearest mains connected device - then you should check the quality of your interconnect cables too.
