BP16 Pass Through - Problem
« on: 29 Nov 2010, 11:37 pm »
Hello,

I've got pass through working on my Bp16, but I have a problem.   Pass through is assigned to the TV input.  I seems to me that the pass through has a bug in it.  When I turn the amp on and the amp is on TV input there's more gain than when the amp is switched to TV input from another input.  The difference ( in gain ) is huge.

Annoyingly I picking up some noise from my cables from the AV amp to the BP16, and I can hear this.  It's really loud with unity gain high (on start-up ), and annoyingly audible when I switch to the TV input.

What should I do?

Thanks

Ron

Check the output from your TV or processor -- Is it a line-level output or is it controlled by the volume control of the TV/processor?

No it's not line level.  It's from the pre-amp output from my AV Amp.

If I compare pass through to gain to where I have to position the volume dial ( without pass through on ) for the same gain then:
- when Pass Through is activated and the amplifier is turned on to the Pass Through channel (TV in my case - but this doesn't matter), then Pass Through is equal to a full volume setting.
- then if I change my input channel selection on the BP16 (for example switching to CD input ) and switch back to TV (my Pass Though channel) then the Pass Through utility gain is equal to the volume being at 3 o'clock on the BP16.

Ron,
As I understand your setup, if pass through is on for the TV input on the BP16, then your AV Amp controls the volume.  The BP16 volume control would not be working for the TV input.  If the AV amp does control the volume, then you probably need to go through a setup on the AV amp to balance the volume for all the speakers.  Otherwise --

I think that the BP16 may have a problem. It's connected to my AV amp in a pass though configuration. That is, the BP16 should have a fixed gain. The volume is controlled by the AV Amplifier and the BP16 applies a fixed gain to the preoutput signal from the av amp. I understand in the case of the BP16 this is 1db. However when the bp16 is turned on and is in pass through mode then the volume will reduce if I do nothing else other than switch back and forward between sources.

Hi James,

Do you know if my email was received by Mike, I've not heard anything back from him?

Thanks very much.

Sounds correct

From the manual
http://www.bryston.com/BrystonSite05/09manuals/BP16_MANUAL_20090707.pdf
"PASS THROUGH mode sets the pre-amp gain to 1 (unity gain) and locks out the volume & balance controls for any single analog audio source. "

Unity gain being a of factor 1 (equivalent to 0 dB) where both input and output are at the same voltage level and impedance , similar if you're familiar with tape in/ tape out, tape out connected directly would give you full volume at the amp with no attenuation.

Hey Ron;

I e-mailed you on December 1st, but it looks like Gmail refused the message, as it had an attachment.  If you have an alternate e-mail address, please e-mail it to me, or I can have the software posted to our ftp site.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi James,

There's still problems with the firmware on my BP16.  On the weekend when my wife was trying to turn down the volume, it went up to maximum.  Which I must say is really very loud ( I'm happy that I have the 7BSST set to 23dB gain ).  I had to turn the preamp off.   Additionally, I still occossionally ( once ever couple of months ) get the problem where the amp goes very load after being switched from pass through mode.  Are these fixable problems?   I really like the sound that I'm getting from my Bryston PMC setup, but I hate buggy products.  I'm at the point now that I want to take the BP16 back to my dealer and trade it in on the BP17.  Suggestions?

Regards

Ron
