« on: 24 Nov 2010, 02:14 am »
Can I take HD's with my music that been uploaded using itunes on a Mac and plug the HD's into a PC with itunes and it work?

Of course the directory would need to be the same but will it work?

I upload in the AIFF Encoder format.

The HD will need to be reformatted for windows. If one of the format options lets you keep all of the files it might work.
Can't believe I'm answering this as I am fairly computer illiterate.

Darn it!  I forgot about that.     Yes, it's used Mac Journaled with GUID.

Can I copy from my Mac drive to another drive that is formatted differently then?

I think you can copy the files to something like a memory stick or flash card and then move them to the pc. The problem with that would be the limited size of the card.
If you want to go to another HD you would still need to have proper format.
I really gotta learn more about this stuff.

Format the drive as FAT32 and you should be fine:

If your Mac drive is formatted as HFS or HFS+ (likely), you can read it on a Windows PC with MacDisk.

I will be able to format on the Mac to FAT32?  Or do I need to do that on a PC and then plug it into the Mac and transer files?

All you would need to do is have Mac OSX format a "new" external drive as FAT32 (MS-DOS(FAT)) using the disk utility.  Once formatted, you will see the disk on the desktop/finder and all you need to do is copy the files over.

If you don't have a spare drive but do have a good backup and you have room on your HFS formatted external drive, then you could resize your HFS partition and add a FAT32 partition to start the copy over.

My advice though for work, get a second USB drive, that way you won't have to worry about theft and you can consider it an "offsite" storage.

Yes, I will buy another drive.  No problem there.  This will be a work ONLY drive for my PC.   :thumb:

Use the finder to copy :).   If you aren't afraid of the command line you can use rsync.  I'm sure there is a GUI to synchronize directories but my command line journal is strong. :).
