Recreating my library on a new computer??
« on: 23 Nov 2010, 10:27 pm »
Hi
I have a Transporter. All my music files are on a dedicated server running Linux.  I manage the music files and add new ones using itunes on my ibook.  However I also want to add and manage the music files using a desktop PC (sorry!).  So once I have downloaded itunes to to the PC is there a way for me to recreate/import my music library either from the server or from my ibook??

Assuming you are using iTunes, just enable home sharing on both computers with the same iTunes account and copy at will.   If you don't want to have duplicate libraries, then probably search the apple.com forums for advice on how to convert.

I don't have an itunes account as I am not interested in low res downloads.

I think what you want is to be able to manage one iTunes library from two different computers.

I've never gotten this to work correctly while both instances of iTunes are open, but if you do a network share and point both of your iTunes applications (one on each computer) to the same library folder, it should work. The only issue is you can only have one copy of iTunes open at a time.

Perhaps this restriction is no longer true in newer versions of iTunes.

If you're looking to control and manage a single library via multiple computers, you will end up corrupting the library. I'd recommend against it. Library management (not control, or sharing) should be restricted to a single computer.

Actually I am not bothered about managing the library from both computers; if I can rereate the library in the itunes on the PC then I'd be happy to delete it from the ibook, so what is the best way of doing that ?

I am puzzled at the OP's response to iTunes home sharing.  As far as I know (I don't use it;I am going to use my two iTunes sharing a large collection on a NAS) it does not require you to listen to low rez, and since you are already using iTunes on the iMac how do you not have an account?

For the NAS approach, what you do is store the music on the NAS and map a drive letter like F:\ on a PC and simply connect to the NAS folder from a Mac. Then point your iTunes Music location to the location of the music on the NAS.

I don't have an itunes account as I am not interested in low res downloads.

Then don't use the account to purchase media.  Just use it to move copy files between computers running iTunes.    Otherwise open up a file share and rsync the files between computers.  Both options are reasonalable, but thought I would give you a real easy option that will also transfer the artwork, playlist etc.

You seem to be indicating that if I have itunes on my computer then I must have an itunes account.  If i have then i'm oblivious of it; perhaps I registered with apple and then forgot about it because I never download music, only upload from CDs.  Anyway I will look into this sharing approach.

BTW, just to be clear, I'm not talking about moving the actual music files - as I said in the first post they are on a dedicated server - I just want to replicate the library info in itunes on the PC.

When i said move, i should have said copy.

I read the ilounge link twice, but now am confused as I will explain below.

Moved main PC with itunes down stairs (on line, working).  Bought new iMac as the main computer (the computer I want itunes, ipods, phones synced to).  Start reading on how to transfer library.  Go upstairs and itunes found the library on the old pc.  :?       Now what do I do?  I had a back up drive hooked up to the pc and was hoping I could use that to transfer in the library which I'm (pretty sure) is on there backed up.  Will I have doubles of each song in the library if I hook this hard drive up to the imac?  I don't really want itunes or content on the old pc in the future as I want to use the old pc for flac files.
thanks for any assistance.
