A/V-3 Distance from wall question.
« on: 22 Nov 2010, 11:44 pm »
Well now that I have all 7 speakers done I've started to work on the actual theater room. Originally I was planning to not build a false wall on the front stage so that I would have more flexibility with speaker placement for tuning purposes. Well the wife has looked at a bunch of pictures of finished theaters and she prefers the stealth look. I have a fair amount of room to play with regards to stage depth but I don't want the speakers so far from the wall that I have to build the false wall 3-4 feet from the rear wall leaving a huge sunken effect where the screen resides. I am planning to build large frames covered in speaker grill type cloth. So.... Any thoughts on speaker distance on the A/V-3 towers to the rear wall? I was just playing them while moving them around and I didn't hear a ton of variation when they were within 3 inches of the wall and 2 feet away. The bass was more prominant when they were closer though. The other thing to keep in mind is I plan to treat the entire wall where the stage will be with something like OC 703 or another material. Any recommendations on acoustic materials for a dude on a serious budget? As for side wall distance they will be a minimum of 3-4 feet away.

Thanks in advance!

Ron

My AV-3's are about 22 inches from the rear wall and the bass  sounds very well balanced to me. I experiment with moving them closer to the rear wall but the bass was too prominent. So for my room 22 inches seems to be about optimum. Suggest that you experiment with your speaker placement until it sounds best to you.
