SB3 and Softsqueeze keep hanging...
« on: 13 Nov 2010, 05:34 pm »
I am using squeezecenter 7.5.1 with a SB3 and softsqueeze.
About every 30 minutes or so the player will hang up. :(
Does'nt matter which player or if I'm listening to internet radio or music from my harddrive....
I just hit play and it goes again...
Are there some settings that can be addressed or is thes prone to the version of squeezecenter??

You don't mention how you have your players connected - wired or wireless.  I am running multiple players with 7.5.1 without any problems, so doubt it has anything to do with Squeezebox Server.  Softsqueeze is a work in progress however.  Have you tried running without it to see if the problem still happens?

The SB3 is wireless but the softsqueeze client is on the same PC as squeezecenter so I don't think it's a wired/wireless issue....
From what I read softsqueeze is almost obsolete and is being replaced by "squeezeplay"...
But I like the interface with the softsqueeze.
Regardless the same thing is happening to both players...

Point being that if Softqueeze is causing the problem, it would affect everything else.

If I shut the softsqueeze down it still happens to the SB3 and vice versa, if I unplug the SB3 the softsqueeze still hangs.
So I think it's a probelm with the Squeezecenter, possibly a buffer issue but I'm not really sure....

In my own experience, whenever this exasperating issue raised its head, I would revert to an older version of the server s/w, and the problem would go away.  Recommended!

http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/index.php

Here you can source 7.4, 7.5, or 7.6 and play with those to see if they help.

Here you can find every version ever produced...

Good luck!

Thanks again Mark!!
What version are you using??

Should I be pairing the version of slimserver with a softsqueeze of similar vintage??

I am way out of date.

Running on a dedicated PC that never hits the Internet, I think I am back on 7.0.1.

You're awesome Mark, more power to ya brother!!!! That's fantastic! Rock on.
I know all about "Squeeze" issues, and that's most certainly one way to overcome them, right there!

Yup, just over 2 straight years without a hiccup, after making the adjustment to run wired.   It did require buying a used PC, and running some wires, and taking the time to get it all up and running, but ever since it has just been power up the PC, flip on the amps, and go.  Flawless.

To answer rtate's second question, I would think that you will want to run softsqueeze of a similar vintage to the server software yes.

I looked at using an old PC, then realized that the noise and power consumption on a standard PC far exceeds that of a small form factor (SFF) PC with an external brick power supply like those used for laptops.

I also thought of using an old laptop, but those were limited by the amount of storage on board, and trying to change that was going to cost more than the whole SFF rig/Vortexbox, and it would still be running a full operating system instead of the stripped down Linux image.

Sticking to old versions of Squeezebox Server may work if you don't mind missing features and support for newer clients like the Boom and the Touch.  A lot of performance and other bugs have been cleaned up since 7.0 though.

I am running SoftSqueeze 39b1 btw, which version do you have?

Final suggestion - there is a widget for Windows 7 that replaces Softsqueeze - Squeezebox Controller and it is free as well.

Available from http://www.bencoleman.co.uk/squeezebox-gadget.

I have switched to this in preference to SoftSqueeze on my Win7 machines.

I am using softsqueeze 3.7 on the same PC as the server.
Last night I noticed an error log that refered to a Java "runtime error"
I scanned through the log but could not tell if it was related...

So first order of business is to at least use the latest version of SoftSqueeze...

I never found Softsqueeze to be very reliable.  When I used to remotely stream music from my home server to my PC at work I always used Squeezeslave, which is a 3rd party software client with no user interface.  I used the web interface for controlling playback.

Syncing software based clients has never worked flawlessly, but syncing was completely reworked in a recent release of the software (7.4 or 7.5, IIRC), so I would definitely upgrade the server to the latest version.

As far as the user interface is concerned, Softsqueeze emulated the simple one and two line user interface of the SB2/3, while SqueezePlay emulates the interface from either the Controller or Squeezebox Touch.  I would find it difficult to believe that anyone would prefer the former over the latter.

If you are truly having a problem with Java I would suggest updating to the latest build and using "JavaRa" to remove all your old Java versions.

JavaRa can be found here...
