All defensive statistics have holes in them. The field being played at, types of pitchers on the team, and various other things can have an impact. All you need to do is watch Jeter to realize his range isn't very good. He's never been a top defensive SS IMO, though he's in the better half during his best years. A lot of times, the best defensive shortstops are guys who can't hit or on poor teams but noone wants to give them the awards...be it due to lack of exposure or because it's not as marketable.
