Oh brother, now he's asking for his finders fee on Audio Circle

The reason why so many of us are going for the great sound of the 3950/3960's is because they are so inexpensive, and we're so
piss poor

Yet, if we all contributed just $1 to Rosco, maybe we'd appease  him  :notworthy:

lonewolfny,
Al Di Meola, "Kiss My Axe" masecre in 5 part harmony continued...

My original intent was to buy both a 3950 & a 4900.  The Best Buy down the street from me was out of stock on the 4900 but told me the one in Arlington had 9 of them.  So I made the 30 drive to Arlington only to find out their computer was screwed up.  It shows 9 but they have 0.  So, I bought one 3950.

I returned the problematic 3950 to the Best Buy in Lewisville which is only about 10 minutes from my home.  I exchanged it for a new one and purchased a second one.

I've played about 8 discs in the one hooked to my Tempest and at least half of them were discs I had burned.  All is good except for track 3 Kiss My Axe.  It does exactly what the first 3950 did.

The other 3950 is plugged into my Denon 3802.  My wife and I watched Leauge Of Extraordinary Gentlemen Monday night without incident.

I just poped Al into my H/T 3950 and it did exactly the same thing the other 2 3950s do.  So, Al's batting 1000 here with 3 players from 2 different stores.

I'd like to try 2 experiments.
1.  I'll try burning a copy of Kiss My Axe today and see if it will play.
2.  Let's see if your 3950 will play the damn thing.

lonewofny, if you will shoot me an email with your address I will send you the damn thing.  I'm very curious to know if your machine will play it.

There is a BestBuy @ Flatiron Crossing which I think is technically in Boulder County.

Actually that would be the city and county of Broomfield.  All of the Flatirons Crossing area is in Broomfield, hence why Boulder was ticked to lose the sales tax revenue to the 'new mall'.  I'm thinking of going down there an picking one up too.  They have my 563a for repairs at the moment and for $60 I wouldn't mind a substitute that can go into my second system.

Cool I didn't realize Broomfield had its own county.  Has it always been like this or is this something new?

I've noticed that my 3950 has skipped on a couple of tracks.  I haven't been able to remember what cd's they were.  It seems like it has trouble with certain discs and it might not necessarily be the condition of cd, it just doesn't like it

" lonewofny, if you will shoot me an email with your address I will send you the damn thing. I'm very curious to know if your machine will play it." I've taken Captain Humble up on his offer...were exchanging "Axe" cd's to see if the problem is the cd or the 3950. :)

i picked one up last week.  I was listening with a headphone amp last night.  I was hearing "distortion and crackling" sound .  I thought it was the CD so I tried the same song played through two other players and everything was fine.  Any reason I'd be hearing this?  I'm going to return it and maybe get a dfferent one.

My 3950 arrived today. A bit distorted at first, I thought...Am burning it in. As a newbie I have some general questions about CD players.

If I decided to use a Scott-Nixon TubeDAC, what am I bypassing in the 3950? Am I losing some of its good sound? Anything to gain with an external DAC?

rosconey,

You mention they will have a SACD/DVD-A coming out in June, do you have any more information on that? Model number, or link to greater details? I'll be in the market to replace my 4+ year old SD-1600 DVD player and would love to have the added formats.

Thanks.

This summer is going to open Pandora's box.  I know that Denon is going to be unleashing their new line-up as I am sure that Pioneer will.

Captain Humble's "Kiss My Axe" cd arrived today. Put it in the 3950...track 1 ok.....track 2 ok....track 3....at 1 min. and 2 sec.'s...skipped back to the beginning of track 1. I tried it a number of times....same result ! I then put the cd into my Phillips CD-80 CDP. No problem with any tracks ! My copy of " Kiss My Axe ", that I sent to Captain Humble, played fine in his 3950, as stated in an email I received from him. I even burned a copy of his cd...and it played fine in my 3950. I've had no problems playing any of my cd's in my player. My conclusion...Captain Humble....time for another copy. Very strange indeed !! :?

lonewolfny42,
Just wanted to thank you publicly for helping me with, and expanding on my little experiment.
As you stated, my experience with the 3950 and "KISS MY AXE" mirrors yours.  Strange indeed.

I've had my 3950 burning in for 24 hours on a secondary system.  I'll move it over this evening to hear how it sounds.  My unit is pretty quiet.  If I really get up close I can hear the disc spinning but not from more than a step or two away.

After 30 hours of continuous burn-in I moved the 3950 over to my main rig for the comparison to my current digital front end.  As a stand alone player, the Toshiba IMS lacks the depth and soundstage of my BC Dac2 and Modwright Pioneer transport.  In comparison, I really had a hard time listening to the Toshiba.  There is a glare I hear on female vocals that gives me a headache.  I had enough of that so I tried the 3950 as a transport to the Dac2.  OK, that's much better but it seems somewhat restained, with indistinct bass.  Back to the Pioneer with Modwight level 2 transport mods.  Much more open with smooth clear vocals and sharp transients.

So is the Toshiba better than other players in its class?  Can't say.  I haven't listened to any other inexpensive units.  I would have to try some of the mods listed on AA as I am sure that they would help.  Perhaps 30 hours was not enough burn-in time.  Either way I have a cheap DVD player which I needed.

Rosconey,

I was interested to hear the 3950 cause you just never know how it will be.  I always try to keep an open mind about these things.  I'm not the type to try every demo on the planet for the sake of hearing it in my system.  If I am seriously looking for a component then I will demo what I can.  But for $60, I can try.  The cool thing about audio is that there are so many options and combinations to put together.

I think that you will love your Tempest pre.  I have not heard it but I do have a Symphonic Line pre and the Extreme Monos and they work very well together.  IMO, you are doing it right by using a source you can live with until your system is set.  I also love tubes and am seriously considering a tubed source one box player myself.

OK 3950 experts,

Am I destined to look at either ascending or descending track times and never know the Track Numbers in the little digital display? I looked in the manual and played with all the buttons but I can't seem to get anything but track times with no track numbers!

Also, my unit skipped from Apple Scruffs back to Beware of Darkness only once. Played through the second time. I don't want to have one of those pesky skipping CD problems!

Finally, I never really thought a break-in period made sense. It just seemed that the unit should play right out of the box. Boy, does it ever sound good now that it has a few dozen hours under its belt!

Thanks!
