Help with new listening room.
« on: 4 Nov 2010, 03:08 am »
I'm moving from my current space into a very spacious New York City, pre-war, 2 bedroom apartment. My current room is 12x17 with 9 foot ceilings. Speakers are on the long wall, listening seat up against the long wall, and plenty of RealTraps. The current sound is delicious. Visiting audiophiles love what they have heard, and remark on the panoramic sound stage yet the realistic imaging. Room only had one small open entry way in one corner of the room.

The new living room will be a dedicated listening room, and the dimensions are as follows: 19'x12' with 9 foot ceilings. This room has a wide open entry way on one of the short walls, which leads to the foyer.

I want to setup the speakers on the long wall again with the listening seat up against the back of one long wall. To my right will be a short wall with two windows, but to my left there will be not much of a wall at all, with the wide entry way leading to other parts of the apartment.

How does this affect my acoustics? Do I need to put up panels on stands?

Not having a wall directly to your left may not be a problem, but symmetry is important at the side-wall reflection points and surrounding area for a few feet forward and back. If the two sides reflect differently, even if you have absorbers there, that could affect imaging. Also, if your head is right in front of a reflecting wall, you'll benefit from absorption on that wall. You didn't mention what arrangement of RealTraps you own, so maybe you already have absorbers for behind your head?

Yes, I do have MiniTraps directly behind my head, and it helps much.

So, if the speakers are about 8 feet apart and on the long wall, and I have plenty of room to the sides of each speaker, not having a side wall won't be a problem?

Thanks for the reply.

Without seeing a photo I can only guess, but that seems like it might be okay.
