SOLD - TROELS GRAVENSEN QUATTRO SPEAKERS & STANDS
« on: 3 Nov 2010, 10:38 pm »
TROELS GRAVESEN QUATTRO'S ARE SOLD!
Thank Your For Checking My Post

My asking price of $750 is less than what I paid to purchase just the pair of JA8008 drivers (new never been mounted) and the custom waveguides (already mounted and routed). Just for these 4 items, I paid $842.54. The cabinets, damping materials, my time, etc. are free!

The cabinets and stands are made out of solid 1" thick ribbon stripe sapele custom milled and expertly crafted. The total material cost that I've invested to date is $1,739.89. My labor should be valued no less than $2,000 and market value should be higher. If you purchase these speakers and stands, you will be receiving no less than $3,739.89 in raw cost value for only $750. That's remarkably low and here's why:

I'm pricing these speakers this low because I need the cash quickly. In addition, I do not want to spend any time packing the speakers and will only ship them (local pickup would be ideal) if my local UPS Store packs them and charges you for the actual packing, insurance, and shipping costs. If the UPS Store packs them, any shipping damage is covered 100% without questions. If I pack them, you could end up not collecting or spending a huge amount of time trying to recover your money. I don't want to deal with that kind of scenario. The price I'm asking is so low, that even with packing and shipping costs, you end up with a really great deal and some state of the art world class speakers - definitely one-of-a-kind! I already have the UPS Store packing costs and would need your location to determine shipping costs.

PLEASE CONTINUE READING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS INCREDIBLE OFFER:

These speakers are Troels Gravesen's latest design and provide an overall sound quality similar to his TQWT floor standing speakers. The main difference between the two is that the Quattros have a slightly better linear response and are 90-91 db instead of 94-95 db efficiency and are much more portable than the floor standers even though they look the same and both have the same footprint.

Go to Troels Gavensen's web site at troelsgravesen dot dk and click on the link for his Quattro's. Full information is available there.

HERE'S WHAT I'M SELLING:

I'm selling one pair of speakers and matching pair of stands that allow the Quattro's to look like floor standing TQWT speakers (instead of monitors on an unsightly stand.) I'm a licensed builder and cabinet maker and have been doing this type of work for almost 40 years. I can assure you that the cabinets are as good as anyone with a high level skill set can produce. All of the butt joints are doweled using my DowelMax jig and this results in the strongest bond as compared to any other joinery method. All joints are flush with each other and have a mirror finish. If you would like to review test results, do a search for DowelMax and you will understand what I'm sharing about the strength of these joints. I've included a photo of using the DowelMax to drill holes for a pair of Sapele boards for these speakers.

The cabinets and stands are made out of custom milled ribbon stripe sapele. This is my favorite wood since it is hard, dense, heavy, and yet saws, mills, and sands better than any other wood I've ever worked with. The sapele boards are one piece and are not glued up multiple widths! It is rare to find really great grain as I used for these cabinets and wide boards of this quality even more unusual. A truly great find.

The cabinets have been sanded to 120 grit and are ready for final hand sanding (which is easy). I highly recommend that you use Danish Oil as a wipe on finish. Three coats allows the stripes on the Sapale to "pop" and will provide the most professional finish you will ever see. This finish is easy to do, cheap, and in my opinion, the best possible for this type of wood. I've used it for years and just love the look of Danish Oil on Sapele.

All joints are tight and flattened to a mirror finish with adjoining wood. The interior of the cabinets have been fully lined with Cascade VB-2HD damping material. I used the heavier grade of this material. Once lined, I then attached 3/8" thick needle end felt that I custom ordered from a felt manufacturer (ideal for speaker lining). They attached adhesive to one side of the felt which made installation accurate and attachment solid. I spent a huge amount of time cutting and fitting both the VB-2HD and felt materials. These speakers were to be for my own use and not for resale and the build and building them was a labor of love.

In addition to building the pair of Quattro speakers, I decided to build matching bases that are the same depth and width as the speakers. When stacked, the overall height is 39 inches. If you add Herbie's threaded stud gliders and Herbie's thin fat dots between the speaker and base cabinets, you will increase the overall height another 1 1/2 to 2". With Troels help, I modified his online plans by making the Quattros only 11" wide to match his TQWT floor standing speakers. The final width is 3/4" of an inch less than his and final depth increased to 15". These speakers have a nicer sillouette and appearance and look like floorstanders instead of the Quattros on a stand. These speakers are also much easier to move around and transport since the speakers and stands are separate. Fitting them into a normal sized car is no problem. The TQWT's are huge and weighing around 100 pounds require two people to move them. The Quattros I built are just right for most anyone to handle.

Quattro speaker dimensions: 11" wide x 15" deep x 23 1/2" high (40lbs each)
Matching base dimensions: 11" wide x 15" deep x 15 1/2" high (22 lbs each)

I AM including one pair of Jantzen JA8008 custom drivers that Troels designed and had SEAS build for him. I'm also including one pair of custom waveguides that Troels had custom built for the TW034 tweeters. These custom waveguides have already been routed into the face of the cabinet and are ready for installation of the tweeters on their rear surfaces. The JA8008 drivers have not yet been mounted and will be shipped separately in their own box.

HERE'S WHAT YOU STILL NEED TO DO AND BUY TO FINISH THESE SPEAKERS:

I'm NOT including the pair of Audax TW034 tweeters which you can purchase from Madisound for $72.05 each. I'm also NOT including the crossover components needed to complete the speakers. You can either order the xo components directly from Jantzen or you can source your own parts from here in the US since Troels shares his circuit, parts list, and "photos of how to build" on his web site. You can save substantial money if you source your own parts. Total xo parts should cost somewhere between $200 to $500 for both speakers depending on what you purchase and from where. I'll be glad to provide recommendations and do have a Jantzen quote (incl shipping and paypal charges) for using their parts.

CROSSOVER BOARDS ARE ALREADY BUILT AND MOUNTED:

I've also built 3/8" furniture grade plywood mounting boards for the bottom and back crossover boards each speaker requires. I've used a unique mounting method that allows you to remove the nuts from the embedded screws and work on the boards and then easily place them back into the cabinets. This is really convenient if you decide to change crossover component values for fine tuning.

THE SPEAKER CABINETS I'M SELLING ARE STUNNING:

I've tried to do the best job I could since I had planned on making these speakers my final pair. Like Troel's has commented about his JA8008 drivers - "My desert island speaker system!" Unfortunately, life has a way of changing and I don't begrudge the joy I had in building these fine speaker systems. I just wish that I could have heard them before having to move on.

I've done the really hard work for you and have invested somewhere around 80 hours building the four cabinets. My material cost is around $1,739.89 for the wood, cabinet material and for the pair of drivers and waveguides. The ribbon stripe Sapele I used consists of single wide boards (originally 18" and 14" wide) and just finding this quality and wide wood in a finished 1" thickness with excellent grain was an unbelievable gift and of course came at a premium price.

AN UNBELIEVABLE PRICE:

You will rarely find an offer like this one on Audiogon. I doubt that anyone is willing to invest this much money and time and then sell something this valuable as I'm doing here without benefiting at all. I need to sell these speakers quickly and as a result am making this an offer than anyone interested in owning an extremely high end high quality speaker system would find hard to pass up. I'm only asking for what I paid for the pair of JA8008 drivers and the pair of waveguides. That's it. Everything else is free - no cost - unless you want me to ship them to you. Then . . . actual boxing and shipping cost will be added. I will use my local UPS Store for boxing and shipping and if they box the speakers, their insurance will 100% cover any loss (instead of putting you in a long term battle to prove the actual items worth.)

PICK THEM UP IN ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN OR I'LL SHIP THEM TO YOU

I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan and if you live within a reasonable driving distance, I assure you that this will be a purchase that will give you tremendous musical as well as financial value since you will only be paying for the two drivers and two waveguides. If you live within the Continental US, I'm also willing to ship them but will pass on the actual boxing and shipping cost. Let me know if you are interested and I'll provide some initial boxing and shipping figures that I've obtained.

MY GIFT TO YOU AND THE INCENTIVE I'M USING TO MAKE THIS A QUICK SALE

The cabinets, the damping, material, the felt and around 80 hours of my time is free. I'm also including three packages of MDM3 damping material which is really difficult to obtain here in the US.

Here's the actual value I'm providing if you include a minimum cost for my time (As I've already shared, I'm a licensed builder and cabinet maker and have been doing this kind of work for around 40 years):

1. Pair of JA8008 drivers from Jantzen Audio (Denmark), plus
Pair of custom waveguides from Poland (Jantzen Audio)
(cost = $632.50 + 47.44 PayPal charge + 98 shipping + 65 duty = $842.54)
2. Ribbon Stripe Sapele (custom milled to 1" thickness) ($616)
3. Interior furniture grade plywood bracing ($40)
4. Custom ordered felt (with adhesive) for damping ($90 plus $25 shipping = $105)
5. One Cascade VB-2HD damping sheet ($79.95 + $20 shipping = $99.95)
6. 3 rolls of Monacor MDM3 damping material ($36)
7. 80 hours x $25 = $2,000 (my current billable time is $38 per hour for custom
projects like this). I'm using $25 so no one finds an objection to time
spent or value.

Total value of items 1. - 8. above = $1739.89 materials + $2,000 labor = $3,739.89

Wow- that is one cool project. These look like a killer design. I owned a set of Poor Mans' Strads, one of Troels' designs, and that man knows his business. Something to consider...

Wish you would have had this for sale a month ago.  I'm currently building (almost done) with Troel's DTQWT design.   The DTQWT is another one of his designs using those drivers, same mid and tweet just a bigger enclosure, slightly modified crossover, and bass drivers.
