This may be well known, but it helped me resolve an issue with the Remote app on the ipod.
I wanted to
stream music from itunes on my pc to my ATV 1st gen
and use the ipod remote app for control, viewing album art, etc. However, the remote app would only see content that was
sync'd to the ATV, not streamed. My itunes library was much bigger than the 40GB ATV drive, so syncing was not a good solution.
On the Apple support forums, it was suggested to use AirPlay (formerly AirTunes) on my itunes library to stream to the ATV. Then I switched the remote from ATV to my itunes library and everything worked great. I can control and view album art because Remote is connected my itunes library and the audio goes directly to ATV and then my receiver. See
