hello all, I bought two technics sl1210 mk2 tables and now i am wondering what to get for a preamp and needles. first I have a tube preamp but it has no phono. second is the Stanton Trackmaster II SK any good at all for home use? I know a guy that will sell me two matched pairs for 60 bucks. are dj needles the same as home use needles? if not can u help me out with what to get thanks.

ps what do you guys have and what do you guys like? do any of you use the 1200 series decks? thank you with your help mjc

DJ cartridges are not appropriate for home use. They generally track at much higher weights and the cantilever is built to be played forwards or backwards, like scratchers do. However, I have run Grados and Audio Technica (AT440MLa) with excellent results.

I would not recommend the Stanton phono pres either. There are many much better units that I'm sure others will chime in on. Some may even suggest MC cartridges for your Technics.

Here's a set up for you. DJ cartridges should work just fine for the type of turntables that you have. Scratch away, dude.

Some may think scratching sound is good sound, and that's why such recording are being made, and sold. Also that's why these types of turntables are being manufactured, and bought by their users.

I concur with Wayner's advice. If high quality music reproduction is the path you want to follow, DJ cartridges are not what you want.  BTW, a needle is used for injections. For playing records, one needs a stylus.

Have and love my SL1210.  I'm running a Sound-Smith Boheme cartridge and Jolida JD-9 preamp but there are a gzillion choices at all price ranges.  Maybe if you can specify your budget folks can offer more specific suggestions?  Also you might want to search this site a while to gain insight on what other folks have had success with.
