CD storage
« on: 29 Oct 2010, 11:28 pm »
Hi,

Anybody know where I can get plans for building a cd storage unit? Got close to a thousand cd's I was thinking of making shelves using 6" wide poplar or oak.

Thanks

I managed to find this for anybody interested in making your own shelving. Seems simple enough.http://www.instructables.com/id/Hungarian-Shelves/

I made something simple and quick for DVDs and Blu-Rays but could have easily done it for CDs too.  I did it to fit into an area and keep the media for now in the main room as I was running out of storage.  When it runs out, I have six drawers of a Can Am unit I could use in the unfinished area of the basement and I could store about 1,500 more CDs (about 250 per drawer) or about 600 DVDs (about 100 per drawer).  So I am covered for a bit.  I might build something similar to what I did to replace and expand some other storage I have in the main room but at some point I'll be out of space.  Perhaps a couple of years.

How it's made... Anonamemouses CDVD cabinet.

One starts with a serious pile of MDF.

Glue... Clamps...

Glueing and clamping.

A pile of glued shelves, the edges will be rounded as well. this happens later, but I have no pictures of that.

The shelves placed on a side panel, to determine the angle they will be put in later. In retrospect the shelves lean back too far.

All the shelves, now with rounded edges.

Putting the cabinet together. The top and bottom shelve were in place, and I slid the rest in to their position and screwed and glued them. This was not the easiest way to do it, also I have sworn off screws. Lamello's are the way to go with MDF.

All shelves in place. I now discovered how heavy this cabinet actually turned out.

...and upright. The top three shelves are for DVDs, the rest is for CDs.

Checking for size and "grabbability".

It's fairly huge... 2.40 meters high, 1.25 meters wide.

Ground paint.

Me sanding.

The first coat of paint.

The transformer, hidden in the bottom of the cabinet, for the lights in the sides of the cabinet (it seemed like a cool idea, but I will never do this gain. too much work, the lights are too bright, and they don't shine where they are supposed to).

The cabinet by night. It looks cool, but that's about it.

The CDs and DVDs I owned at the time of construction, July 2007.

The cabinet is for sale, it is full and I need to build something bigger...

That's the problem, you spend all the effort to build, and a couple of years later you have to up size. Nice cabinets btw.

If I keep all files on a hard drive I'd actually just need 2 or 3, and just copy whatever I want to hear to the USB stick. Sandisk already has a 64 MB version 64 GB version out, which would hold about 100 albums in FLAC. My entire collection could be on 12 sticks!

So all we need is a stand for four to five thumb drives - EXCELLENT :thumb:

Hi Robert

I actually can do just about anything. I build custom furniture, change rooms, place bathrooms (and everything connected to them, like tiling, plumbing, electrics etc). But I'm afraid the commute would make it kinda expensive...

I am hoping that someday I bump into a wanted add from Bryston... It would help my move to Canada considerably.
