What's the deal with internet radio?
« on: 27 Oct 2010, 09:38 pm »
I wirelessly stream my music files through a DAC to my receiver and everything sounds great. Internet radio on the other hand streamed the same way sounds like it is being broadcast through a PVC pipe. Does anyone know if this is correctable if possible? Why doesn't the DAC correct this? Or is it just the nature of INet radio in general? Any insight will be appreciated.

It really depnds on the streaming bandwidth. I have found that anything from 128 kbps sounds pretty fantastic and AVRO's 320 kbps is almost indistinguishable from CD. I think the quality of the DAC also makes a big difference. Internet radio tends to be a little lean and bright at times so a DAC that can tame the leanness and brightness by adding a touch of warmth, is good.

Thanks for the reply !
I do tend to stream stations that are lower bandwidth. I will have to give higher rez stations try.

Exactly, check the bit rate of the radio stations you're listening to.  95% of my Internet radio listening is between two stations, one is 128 kbps and the other is 192 kbps.  While they do not sound as good as my uncompressed .wav and .aiff ripped-from-CD files (1411 kbps), they do sound pretty good.

Other stations I have listened to in the 32 kbps to 96 kbps range just don't cut the mustard to my ears.

So...if a higher bandwidth broadcast equates to better sound quality, what happens if a high rez station is broadcasting MP3's ? Would say a 128kbps broadcast sound like it was only 64kbps ? Seems to me that lower sound quality would still result?

I listen to Radio io Jazz streaming at 128k all the time, and it sounds very good on my office system.  8)

I thought the standard was pretty much MP3.  Could be mistaken.  320bps sounds pretty close to CD quality.  I have a card reader behind the nav system of my car and it can read 320bps MP3s with a compact flash card inserted into a card adapter.  Sounds pretty darn good.  The Ricky Lee Jones' Sermon Exposition Blvd. Deluxe Ed. with SACD had 256bps MP3s too which don't sound bad.  The 320bps internet radio streams sound good.  I went to Shoutcast.com and you can sort the stations in audio quality (although some of the information is not 100% accurate on quality) and right click and get the URL.  I liked doing it that way as if I decide or need to edit them, changing the station ID is easy.  I couldn't stand some of the low bit rate stations they pre-programmed on the Pioneer 1120.

In my secondary basement system, I've tried to program the higher resolution ones in my Pioneer 1120 rec'r.  Have not gotten around to the Squeezebox Touch yet in the main system.  Here is what I currently have on the Pioneer 1120:

Phil,

That is a great list.

I cut my Internet Radio Teeth on SHoutcast back when I was an OLIVE dealer.  That is why I was keen on seeing a Media Player/Server that also had Internet Radio capability.

John, thanks.  Even though I don't listen to it tons, it is amount the first things I did when I set-up with receiver.  It took me one listen through what they had programmed I couldn't stand it.  No the receiver is not audiophile and the cheapest one I ever bought but I use the secondary basement system most often for watching football on TV during the weekends as the main room is too bright for daytime TV.  I can't stand low-fi.

I bought the WD Media Player as it said it played WMA.  I spent months (almost a year) recording stuff and then finally took it out of the box all excited to hear 4,200+ songs in lossless WMA and found out it has conversion software and it plays 128bps MP3s.  I listened on my Bryston DAC to about 2 songs and gave the player to a friend and grabbed the Squeezebox Touch.

As I noted, I find the 320bps ones quite good.  I'd actually rather have good quality internet radio vs. HD Radio.  Just the amount of choices.  I have a modded Sansui TU717 in the main system and I do rather enjoy what I can get via the Squeezebox Touch into the Bryston DAC.
