Three guys I like a whole lot...

John McLaughlin

Check out the first three Mahavishnu Orchestra albums, his work with Miles on Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way etc, his work with Al DiMeola and Paco diLucia, The John McLaughlin Trio (with Kai Ekhardt and Trilok Gurtu), his Coltrane tribute After The Rain, his work with Carlos Santana, etc.

John Scofield

He's way funkier than any white guy has the right to be.  I love A Go Go and the more recent Out Louder, with Medeski Martin and Wood.

Django Reinhardt

No specific recommendations here - I just love this music.

Of course it's going to depend on personal preference with regards to the style of jazz guitar you prefer, but have been listening to these guys since the 70's. They all have varying offerings from more classic jazz to rock-jazz fusion.

And Wes Montgomery is a given, and Pat Metheny is a winner as well, though I prefer his earlier work.

If you throw in Bass guitar, check out Eberhard Weber (another ECM artist).

Thanks for this thread. I ordered several of the cd's mentioned that I didn't have. Needed some fresh music.
Btw, "Structures" with John Abercrombie and Eddie Gomez is a favorite of mine, as is anything those 2 guys do.

Check out Jimmy Raney, who always said I don' t play guitar, I play music. Jimmy was always surrounded by the best jazz musicians.

Gabor Szabo, a well known guitarist from Hungary from the 60's-70's. The Sorcerer is the only album I have but I need to find more work from him, every entertaining guitarist.  :guitar:
