I heard those B&W 802D with a 28B and a tube preamp at SonIdeal in Canada.   That is one great sounding system!  :thumb:

Thank God.

Actually, I am happy with my 802D's and the 7BSST2 but I'm not about to go out and listen to the 800 Diamonds.  It might end up costing me another fortune.  I could cut off my kid's college ... I think that he is now a 7th year freshman ... geez.

Hey Levi, you never did say what your speakers were in the vehicle.

Kids education are the priority.

They were 3-way Focal K2 Power car audio speakers.  The mids are in custom pods aimed directly at front passenger.  It is in the picture on page 4 of this thread.

Ahhh.. Brings back fond memories of my first Marantz receiver. Marantz also produces most excellent equipment.

Not as good as BRYSTON of course.

Well, the Marantz was purchased not long after the unpleasantness in S.E. Asia was left behind.  Saw duty during the college years and drunken roommates.  It provide comfort/enjoyment during good times and bad. Survived mass asset liquidation to get enough cash to get to a real job.  Was around for births, illnesses, deaths, kids, holidays, happy times and sad times.  It survived 5 major moves, which is a miracle in it self.

So, when I sit down on a quiet evening it's like listening to an old trusted friend that has never failed me and has always given, never taken.   And, although my Bryston gear will roll my sonic socks up and down, if there were a fire I'd grab the Marantz first, then the Bryston gear and somewhere in there do something about that annoying woman that's hung around here for the past several decades. :)

We will see what the Bryston story is in 35+ years.

So true  :thumb:

My Marantz receiver also served faithfully for almost 2 decades - until the moving company destroyed it on our move to Labrador. I am very tempted to assemble a retro-Marantz system after seeing your receiver. My current SR 19 Marantz has a happy home in the HT system.

Ahhh… those blue lights  :D

My father bought a Marantz 2220B as sort of a house warming gift when he bought our first house.  I was 2, so that was about 32 years ago.  It was the first toy he bought for the house.

My siblings and I all danced around to it as kids.  Countless parties like birthdays, holidays, etc.  Never really thought about it that way until I read 1Zip's post.  Hopefully it'll become a family heirloom.  I've been trying to swipe it from my father for years.  He's a man of few words when it comes to sentimental type stuff, but now that I think about it, that's probably why I haven't been able to pry it from his hands.  Its in the basement system and he's got another system main system, so it's not as if he wouldn't have any music.

Other than an occasional volume pot cleaning, it's been maintainence free.

Question for James:

From the systems/rooms you showed us, which one has the tighter, faster, best defined bass?

Did you find any correlation between room size and bass quality? If so, which room do you preffer?

Hi Nap,

I would say it is much more a function of the specific speaker in a specific room rather than any specfic room size.  In other words the room and the speaker are one.

For instance the Quads in the larger room just could not cut it but in the smaller room the bottom end is just excellent.

At this point I would say the overall tonal balance is good in all three rooms and I tend to move new speakers I am trying from room to room to see how they perform - but the best room for really low low low bass is room 1 with the Thiel 3.7's and the SS1 subs.

By the way I have always felt that getting the bass right in a room is the number one priority - everything else just falls into place better when the foundation of the music is there :thumb:
