Obscure Classic Vinyl Night at GAS West - 10/30
« on: 15 Oct 2010, 03:39 am »
Well, I find myself playing bachelor Saturday the 30th and I thought, hey lets spin some vinyl! But not just any old vinyl will do, lets make it Obscure Classic Vinyl Night at GAS West  :thumb:

Now, just so you know, classic vinyl to me doesn't mean Bob Seger, 38 Special and Marshall Tucker. Classic vinyl means obscure (almost) one hit wonders of 60s and 70s AOR (Album Oriented Rock). I'm talking about bands like Steve Baron, Martin Briley, Budgie, Hudson Ford, Michael Fennelly, Painter and deep cuts from groups you know but didn't realize did them like Les Dudek, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Mott the Hoople and many more. If you grew up in the 60s and 70s here in St Louis and listened to KSHE, you'll recognize the stuff we'll play.

I'm going to put the Music Maker cart on the Dynvector and swap out the Slee Era Gold with the Jazz club so I can do a bit of EQing through the phono pre. Also I'll swap out the First Watt B5 crossover for my Pioneer SF850 so we can easily change XO points and boost the bass when needed...Lord knows 70s rock needs some EQing fairly often.

I'll probably just have the Blue Room and the Redrum up and going for this one. The HH Scott 299 in the Vintage room is on the fritz. If I get that fixed we can spin some vinyl in there too (if you want to hear what got us all hooked on audio way back when). Be forewarned though, the Redrum with the Cornzillas can rip your head off if you aren't careful! I'll try to pad the horns down a bit with a resistor or better yet a pot before the event. Oh, the Chair is in there too! It's a BLAST on classic rock...actually it's a blast on any music.

So, my thought is we'll start somewhere around 3:00 and go til whenever. We'll order some Pizza around 5:00 or 6:00. As usual, if you prefer beer as your drink of favor be sure to bring some. I've just about any other flavor 'harder' stuff you might want.

This event won't be about swapping gear or doing A/Bing, it's going to about hanging and listening to tunes. One other thing, since it's just me playing host, I'm not sure I can handle much more than about 10-15 people.

So, anybody want to make the trek out West and spin some vinyl?

This sounds like I am so much there, Scott!
If I can get off a half-day early....that is.
I've sure I have 'obscura' to add to the listening pile that you don't mind running a stylus over.

great idea!

Bill, sure, bring 'em on over. Might want to give me a buzz before you load up a huge box as I might have it already. Hope you can get the afternoon off. Should be loads of fun!

Chris, that's one group I don't have any of. Sorta reminds me of the Chambers Brothers on some level.  :thumb: Tell you what, I'll give these a spin for the guys when they show up  :green:

Scott, I might try to make this one. It's been forever since I've hung with you guys. Plus, it'll save you a trip for that 'other' thing (assuming you're finished with it by then). I work that day until three, as long as you fellas don't mind "my work smell". I could come straight from my day gig.

My neighbor gave me a box of vinyl, I'll dig through it and see if I can find something appropriate. Of course, I'll take it into the shower with me to clean it off so your cartridge doesn't have to plow through the sludge.

Hey Mitsuman, I've got all those and then some  8)  Here's an old pic of my vinyl collection. Almost five years later, I've added another solid 1k albums and have run myself out of room. I need to make another trip up to Chicago and pick up another couple sections of the Ikea Lak shelving.

Most of my collection (the shelves on the right) is Rock. The entire top row is the really hard to find obscure rock classics. Stuff like The Idles of March, JF Murphy and Salt, Southerland Brothers and Quiver, Doctor Feelgood, Head Hands and Feet, Vinegar Joe, stuff like that. When you take into account what I call 'commons' in the rest of my rock collection, I've got almost everything you heard on KSHE from about 1967 to about the mid-80s. There are some exceptions (of course). I'm not a fan of Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen or some of those other super pop-rock groups that had a four hour rotation back then.

You'll get a feel for it when you come out  :thumb:

The shelves on the left are my jazz collection, White Label Promos and premium vinyl (MoFi, Classic, Pure, etc).

Bob, heck ya! Come on out after work. Things will just be getting going when you show up. No worries about being odoriferous. We can douse you in beer that way you'll smell like everybody else

At last a Saturday event where I'm not working. I will however be recovering from 5th row seats at Roger Waters on the Friday night.

Dave, very cool  :thumb: I think you'll find a couple of the systems pretty darned interesting  :D

Tim, great to know you can make it too. Wish I had tickets to Rodger Waters. I'd love to see the show  :green:

As we get closer, I'll PM my address to the guys who haven't make the trek yet (don't worry, I'm not that far out).

Scott, do you have anything obscure from KDNA?
I can make it out if you got room for one more?

Hi Jim, come on down  :thumb:

Hey guys, thought ypu might want to know, Thunderbrick (the other Bob) stopped by today and dropped off a big pile of vinyl  :thumb: He said 'distribute it to the masses'. So in other words we've got a pile of FREE vinyl for youze all when you show up. Now, it's  nearly all classical with some ethnic music (think German folk) mixed in but it all seems to be in nice condition. Guessing, there's about 150 albums to pick from. If I get some time I may try to cull my collection down some adding to the pile (I've got tons of doubles).
