Looking for an amp builder...
« on: 3 Mar 2004, 09:54 pm »
Hello all...

I posted this already in The Lab, but was told (correctly) that it may serve me well to post it here.

I'm considering purchasing a couple of ASKA 100 Nirvana+ kits from Hugh, but I don't have any experience in DIY projects and need someone to build the amps for me. I do plan to get into the DIY world, but this isn’t the place to start.  (Yes, I know they're not ready yet Hugh, but I have to find someone even if they're not ready yet),

Any and all recommendations for someone competent and trustworthy enough to build them for me are much appreciated.

Thanks.

Dear Mr Double, or is it Mr Ugly.
Where do you live?

DU (or is that Depleted Uranium?)

As you may be aware, I will build up amps and power supplies, but you still need someone to put it in an enclosure and wire up the bits and pieces, like the transformers, the IEC main plug, the mains switch, the amps to power supply, the speaker wires and binding posts.  This is not difficult work, you could easily learn yourself, but yes, great idea, you need someone to at least look over your shoulder.

And, I'd echo Malcolm's question - Where Do You Live?

Cheers,

Hugh

Malcolm/Hugh,

I live in the US, which you and I have discussed before, Hugh, back in December and again a couple of weeks ago.  A quick glance at my profile and you’ll probably remember who I am.

You may not recall, but after several PMs with you I went searching for someone to help.  Thought I'd found one, but it didn't work out.  With the dollar/Euro rate being what it is, I'm not sure it'll work out this time either, but I'll never know if I don't find someone to help.  Having the kit without the wherewithal to put it together is useless.

I'd love to do it for you but there are a few catches.  One, I haven't done a project like this yet.  Just simpler power conditioner, cables, cable cooker and a reverse RIAA.   #2, I am buying a house right now and am pressed for time more than typical (I am an investor for a living).  #3, I am going to take the CFA Level 2 exam again in June and am about to start heavy studying season.   I did really want to build a pair of these for fun but don't need them for myself.

Sounds like you have more than enough to keep you busy for a while, Josh.  Tell you what, though...if I decide to get 'em (yes, "'em", as in two) and no one else has offered, I'll give you a shout and see if you're still interested.  That way I don't add to your already overflowing plate, and you don't have a guy calling every week wondering if his amps are done yet.

Sound reasonable?

DU,

I'm very sorry, yes, I remember well.  We had quite an exchange of ideas!  USAF indeed.  Now why did I forget that?  I love aircraft, too.

As I mentioned, I can build them for you, but you may not like my prices!  Someone local is a great idea, and if Megalusha is offering, I would thoroughly support his offer;  his work, from what I have gleaned, is VERY good.

Cheers,

Hugh

No worries, Hugh...all is well.   :D

And I agree that mgalusha's work is most impressive and I am in communication with him re: the amps.

I'll let you know how it turns out.
