repair of yamaha 2020 receiver
« on: 10 Oct 2010, 05:21 pm »
Hello,
On a recent yard sale run, I came across a Yamaha 2020 receiver. It didn't work when plugged up. No lights, no meters moved, no nothing. Hoping it was just a fuse or something simple I brought it home only to find out that was not the problem. To make a long story short, I found a service notice on-line about "power switch problems". After hooking up a jumper wire with alligator clips from "here" to "there" to bypass whatever doo-hickie as instructed in the notice, I crossed my fingers & flipped the switch....... IT WORKED !!!!!!!!!   (15 minute happy dance).
My question is.... should I make my lucky repair permanent & solder it or leave it temporary so it can be fixed properly at a later time. (will I do more damage by the permanent bypass)?
Thanks,
Mark

What are the negatives associated with the "fix"?

Put a new switch in it for safety reasons. Doesn't have to be a Yamaha part - go to Radio Snacks and get a swith rated for 120VAC operation with the correct poles on it. You can mount it on the back panel if you don't want to mess up the faceplate.

First off, I"m new to this site & want to thank everyone for the help I've received lately. I'm not an electrician or anything close to one. I enjoy tinkering with old equipment & usually have extra parts laying around after I get done. (where did this screw go)? I try not going too deep into "repairs" to keep from doing more harm than good.
On this Yamaha....so far no negative side effects noticed(yet) but I haven't finished hooking everything up. The first time I put it back in the cabinet, I must have bound up the tuner string & broke it which was not as easy repair as it looked. Anyway, finally got everything back together last night, hooked up some speakers, & powered it up. It's working great. The on-off power switch works. I thought I was bypassing it but it works !!! (???) I haven't hooked up any other components to it yet & I'm a little nervous my results being too good to be true.
Thanks again,
Mark
