Basic Questions on Amp Construction
« on: 8 Oct 2010, 02:46 pm »
I am trying to learn some basic concepts about building an amp.  One of the areas that I do not completely understand is how to wire multiple transformers into an amp.

In this picture

How do you terminate the leads from the IEC into the leads of the transformers?  Are they simply wired together?

What happens if you add soft start circuits to this?

Do you need two soft start circuits?

Do the same rules apply if you go from 2 trafos to 3 trafos?

How far appart should shielded trafos be before you need to start putting each one in a seperat enclosure?

Thanks in advance,
Robert

Yes, both tranny leads are wired/connected/terminated together.Given the thickness of transformer wires, you may want to use something like a terminal block. Connect the tranny leads to the block (maybe using spades or similar soldered to the wires for safe, secure connection). Then wire the IEC to the terminal block (with Line and Neutral appropriately separated of course).

Not sure about the Soft Start. It has a 10A fuse, so that may be a limitation with multiple trannies. May want to ask Cristi of Connex about that.

I believe farther apart is better but I have two very close in my amp enclosure and it seems okay (there is a very low hum, though, so...).
