TT grounding question
« on: 7 Oct 2010, 12:58 am »
I think I know the answer to this, but to be safe...

I have a small hum from my TT, which gets reduced when I connect the ground wire from the TT to the phono preamp.

But, I also have a ground lug on my preamp.

Is it safe to try any and all grounding possibilities w/ these three connection points?

Anyone want to guess if it'd be best to go straight from TT to pre?

Thanks

I would think any connection that minimizes hum!

I always went straight to the ground lug on the preamp with no problems.

Hi Mike,

I too have a phono pre and a fullfunction pre with grounding lug.  I ground my arm to the phono pre through the IC and then ground my table itself to the ground lug on my full function pre.  I've never noticed any ill effects of doing this.  If it doesn't add any more hum (ground loop issues possible in this case?) I can't imagine it would do any harm if you used both ground lugs.

Keep us informed.

It is also possible to ground your TT thru the electrical system via your 120 volt outlet. I have my studio common grounded thru the cover screw, then connected to a terminal block that several tables are grounded to. The cover screw is mechanically (and electrically) connected to the outlet's ground (except for isolated outlets) and a convenient way to ground the tables without worry for a ground loop. I used a circular wire lug under the screw, soldering the wire to the lug, rather then crimping, then connecting the other end of the wire to the terminal block.

In some cases, the shields of the TT interconnects are also connected to chassis ground, and running a separate ground may present a ground loop. So there are more ways to skin a cat.
