Bogen CHA20 Y as an audio amp
« on: 5 Oct 2010, 11:53 pm »
Hi, I recently picked up a mint condition Bogen CHA20 Y (signifiying RCA input) with Bugle Boy 12AX7s (matched and stronger than NOS to boot!), RCA 6V6s and a 6X4 rectifier. I believe this is a PP amp.

I am curious to see if anyone has tried using one (or two as monblocks) of these as an audio amp. If so, will it require any modifixations to operate hum-free etc.

I have been too busy to try it out yet, unfortunately. I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this amp or other similar ones.

Take some photos of it! I would like to see the internals as well as what's under the top cover. Sometimes these can be more trouble than they're worth if you are considering repairing/updating the existing circuit.

One item to look for.  If this was intended for a PA system, many Bogens intentionally rolled off the low end severely if they were intended for voice.  If you alter that circuit, you might find it is not happy trying to produce what it wasn't designed to do.
