Chime and Digikey parts availability :(
« on: 4 Oct 2010, 06:41 am »
Just bought most of the bits and pieces to build a Chime (and a Clarinet and some Cymbals), but a couple of things weren't available and had to go for alternatives. Hoping someone might let me know if I have chosen badly!? :?

P11423CT-ND 0.01uF 2kV, now obsolete. is “490-4240-ND - CAP CER 10000PF 1KVDC E3 RAD” at 1kv ok instead?

478-3195-ND 47pF 50V, for C502 comes up as "CAP CER 1.0UF 50V 20% RADIAL", so I got “490-3741-ND - CAP CER 47PF 50V C0G RADIAL” instead as it matches the schematic (i think). is this the right part for C502?

2SC3942 for Q402 is now obsolete. They sent me P2"2SC3503FSTU-ND - TRANSISTOR NPN 300V 100MA TO-126", which I'm guessing isn't ok?

NJM78M08FA for U400 is out of stock, and they offered “LM7808CTFS-ND - IC REG 1A POS VOLT 3TERM TO-220” instead, but current output is 1A instead of 500ma. Should I keep hunting?

Lansing weren't real keen to even figure out what the shipping was, so will be busy in the garage with some exotic woods instead :) and figuring out how to facilitate the knobs on the front..

No, your replacement is for DC. Look at: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=BC2361-ND

Long-lasting mistake in the manual? Hmmm... Sounds strange. Your choise is OK IMHO.

Thanks for your help folks! Steep learning curve ahead for me and all your helpful advice is very welcome.

Got all the parts sorted. Now just need some spare time.

Brinkman,
You got me thinking. Sadly, it must be about 15 years since I last bought any audio stuff, so this birthday is well overdue  Just hoping my ears haven't had too many birthdays.
I'll be sure and take some photos, was thinking a high speed camera for when the power eventually gets plugged in so I can track from where and how many puffs of smoke start coming out..  :)

There are some knobs that can be made from exotic woods, which are  caled "THINGAMAKNOBS." However, I can't seem to bring up the name opf the copany that makes them. They will make a knob in almost any shape and size you want.

Well, they look great. You've inspired me to get out my little metal lathe and see if I can't produce something to match the wood and brass chassis (which still only exists in my head). Still need to figure out how and or where to get a suitable internal collet and setscrew.
