Welcome to the Planar Circle/Manufacturer's Links
« on: 3 Oct 2010, 01:03 pm »
Ladies and gentlemen,
If your tastes in speakers run to things that look like giant cubicle dividers or doors with wires running out of the back, you've found the right place.
This is a circle for ALL models of planars and electrostatics.

There are only three rules which I ask that you abide by:
1) no commercial posts
2) no personal attacks and
3) enjoy the circle.

Here's some manufacturer's links that might prove useful:

Yay!  Thanks for the efforts Steve.  As far as rule #2, I've found Maggie owners are like pot smokers, there's never an argument, just groks on spacial boundaries.   8)

Hey, count me in.  Just curious: Has anyone here built any DIY magnetic planars?

Congrats on being moderator for the new planar forum Steve. I've been lurking through the threads and it promises to be very interesting. And no, I don't currently own a set of Maggie's, but what better place to learn about them. After all, cumpulsive collector disorders are far reaching! :green:

I found the Circle when I took a "detour" from my MMGs to a pair of single driver Tektons, enjoying that forum. Now that I'm back (for good  :green:) using the Maggies, this will be very helpful. Good deal!

Yup... I also gave single drivers a try out of curiosity of what might be possible beyond planars.  Still have a pair of Fostex-based Tektons, but not in the main room where the MG1.6 dominate.

Tried the high-eff route as well when looking for a planar alternative including the open-baffle Hawthorne Silver Iris (close but no cigar) and currently a pair of big gorilla coffin horn-tweeter pro-driver 3Pi (about as opposite a Magnepan as you can get, but the constant directivity design is promising enough I got parts to build a pair of 4Pi).

Maggies still get the nod at this time.

Also have a pair of tweaked MG10.1 that are supposed to be used for rear channel use, but I never seem to have my multi-channel stuff up and running.

Well done, Steve - I just found this site (from a MUG post).  :D  I am away from home right now but when I get back I'll post some pics of my new "Frankenpans" - which I made using 2.5 bass panels and T-IVa mids & ribbons.  Basically, these are identical to the IIIas I had previously except for fact that the mid panels and bass panels are on separate sheets of mylar.  This allows the bass panel to be completely isolated from the mid panel & ribbon - which gives a significant advantage in SQ.   :o

Andy

In the process of searching for Quad reviews, I stumbled upon this one which is rather telling - recommended components from the senior editors at Enjoy The Music:
