Robert Plant - Band of Joy
« on: 22 Sep 2010, 03:08 pm »

The Band of Joy is Robert Plant's latest CD. In 1966 Robert was a member of the first Band of Joy and their music was heavily influenced by American blues. On his latest recording Robert goes back to his roots with a mix of vintage and modern rock, blues and folk. Continuing the laid back vibe of Raising Sand, The Band of Joy is a thoughtful collection of songs that are truly a joy.

The Band of Joy is at the top of my Record of the Year list.

NPR Music has an interview with Robert - Born In England; Made In America

Thanks for the links Chris.

The female singer and guitarist in the Band of Joy is Patty Griffin. Her latest CD, Downtown Church, is also at the top of my Best Music of 2010 list. Don't be put off because this is an album of gospel and spirituals, these songs have soul.

Listen to samples here.

I didn't know that tidbit, thanks for sharing. Fortunately tho, I do have this latest album of hers, good contemporary folk regardless of the message.  8)

I've been listening to Band of Joy for the past couple of week, and have really been enjoying it.  In fact, I've enjoyed it much more than Raising Sand.

It's probably just me, but each time I listen to Band of Joy I'm reminded of some of Mark Knopfler's recent efforts.  I'm developing a little fantasy about a collaboration between these two in the not-too-distant future.

It's funny how I find myself drifting towards music these days that falls between genres, whether it's The Bad Plus covering Nirvana and Blondie, Cassandra Wilson doing The Rolling Stones, Brad Mehldau doing Radiohead or Robert Plant or Mark Knopfler playing a bluesy, bluegrassy, folksy, rocky melange, it all has the effect of reminding me how much better music is when it's played thoughtfully rather than produced to meet some marketing criteria.
