Have you ever modded a power conditioner?
« on: 19 Sep 2010, 03:45 pm »
A few years ago I sold a conditioner that actually had good-quality parts but, performance-wise, compressed dynamics.  The buyer later told me he added bypass caps, and that improved the sound quality a lot.

I've thought about this, and I'm guessing there are some power conditioners that have a good basic design that could be greatly improved with better caps and resistors.  I'd be looking at something like a low end Monster Power unit, or maybe even an old Chang unit since those appear to have a good amount of space inside the chassis.

Thoughts?

Well, FWIW, I had Cullen Circuits, the original manufacturer for many PS Audio components, modify my P300 after I stupidly fried some transistors when I accidentally shorted it. Here's a link to what they modify: http://www.cullencircuits.com/webapps/site/67005/78076/shopping/shopping-plus.html?find_groupid=9535
I was quite happy with the results, more refinement and better dynamics. I only use the P300 to supply power to my cd player and phono preamp.
