Mac mini with touch as remote
« on: 17 Sep 2010, 12:41 am »
I am going to the Apple store this weekend with the intention of purchasing a Mac Mini to be used primarily as a music server. My question before the visit is, can I use my ipod touch as remote control for the Mac Mini? I don't intend to have a monitor or keyboard hooked to the mini after the cds are loaded so I'm hoping the touch will suffice. Any advice is appreciated.

Yes, that's what I do and it works great. Just remember to configure Itunes to start automatically when you turn on the mini. Do this in the system preferences, account options.

Yes, you just need to download the free Remote app from the iTunes store.

Mac Mini experts:
Can I control Pandora and Rhapsody without a monitor attached?  I have a Touch.

See this thread (there are others too) covering the use of a VNC app on iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad to control your computer applications, including itunes and Pandora

I use an app called "Desktop", works like a champ.  Allows me full control with my iPad.

Brought the Mac Mini home today and all is well. The touch is working as a remote just fine.
My plan is to use the mini with no peripherals but I might have to leave them hooked up until I get a feel for it. I tried to load a Beatles cd and it was stuck waiting for me to let itunes know whether or not it was a remastered version or the original.
Using the headphone out to listen but will need a dac. Thinking on getting a PS Audio dac III.

This is awesome...i've seen several A/V receivers that can be controlled by the iPhone/iPod Touch.
