This wasn't that long ago, yet these pictures almost seem to suggest otherwise.

I remember those from a Flickr set.  I believe I favorited the one with the guy on the horse with the dog.  Super sweet!  The color rendition and grain of all those is just great.  I know it is theoretically possible, but I wouldn't know the secret to reverse engineering that look in Photoshop.  It pains me to think, much like a stubborn audiophile, that if the film borders were cropped off I would not be able to tell.  But I really want to believe I could, cause those are just so creamy you can almost smell the slide projector. *sigh*

Back when I was at the University of Louisville in the early '80's, I did some work at the photo archives (part of the library) They had some 4x5 Kodachrome transparencies. Absolutely stunning color. I think they were from the WPA project and the film was never made available to the general public. I didn't know such a thing even existed.

Hey!

Wow!  :o 4x5 Kodachrome! That must have been a sight to behold seeing them. I know they used to make them in larger format but I've never seen that before :D

Take care,

Thanks for sharing that link, a fascinating look at that time in history. We're so used to seeing images from that time in monochrome, it's almost a shock to see Kodachrome images from the early forties. It's interesting how the early Kodachrome in these scans seems to have a bit less vibrant appearance than the Kodachrome I knew from the seventies onwards. I wonder if it's an age/storage related issue or ??? Perhaps the lack of multi-coating on lenses of the time might account for some of this. SET Man, does your memory of the Kodachrome 4x5's you saw reconcile with the look of this set of images?
