Line level signal boosting?
« on: 10 Sep 2010, 04:21 pm »
I have my B60 connected to a few different sources.  One is the analog out from my TV.  When I use the B60 to listen to the TV, I have to crank the volume to about 3:00 or so, whereas everything else is at 11 or 12.  I've gone through all the TV settings with no change.  It's not the B60 (I've tried the TV on the other inputs)  I'd connect the cable box and DVD player to the B60, but I don't have enough inputs.

Any thoughts on how to boost the signal from the TV?

PS - James,  Thanks for the recommendation of the Jensen ground isolator for my cable a while back.  Huge picture and sound quality difference.  Worth a lot more than the $50 or so price!

Some TVs have 2 different line outs. One is the usual line level out and the other one is controlled by the TVs volume control. To use this connection, you may have to go into the TVs menu and set external speakers to the off position (using the variable output jacks) then crank the volume up on the TV so it's level is approximately the same as your other sources. With this set up, the only way to listen to the TV is with your music system on.

Or maybe you plugged into the variable line out by mistake in the first place, and you should go looking for the normal line output?

Hi Stu,

Where do you have the volume set on the TV?  I have to set my TV volume at about 75% of full volume to have a comfortable volume level at 10:00 to 12:00 on my BP26.  I then flip the TV speaker cutoff switch so all the sound is coming out of the stereo speakers then switch from stereo to mono on the 26 for non musical events like sports etc.   I don't imagine the line level gain on the BP26 is different than the BP60.

Sorry Wayner.  I must have posted exactly the same time you did and am saying pretty much the same thing :thumb:

Assuming your output from the TV is fixed level:

Add an external input selector switch and run the cable box and DVD straight to the Bryston this way. Make sure the cable box is on fixed level out.

Most TV's only put out 150mV or so line level and your CD player, for example, is around 1V, so big level difference. For some reason TV manufacturers haven't figured out what line level means in the 21st century...

If you had an AV receiver, you could just tweak the input level to match other sources, but in your case you cannot.

Thanks for the replies, guys.  Interestingly enough, there was a setting burried into other settings.  The volume out was at variable rather than fixed.  Changed that and it worked.  I've owned the TV for 5 years and never had the issue.  I move, and somehow that setting changes and everything else stays the same.  Very odd.
