Marty, let me know how you like the DAC mod when you get it done.  The preamp mod has made me fall in love with my music again.  Even my son can't stop commenting on the improvement.  I can't wait till I can get my DAC done but tuition payments and car repairs are killing me slowly!

Forgive me if this question is covered elsewhere, but as an owner of an Ultra EC, is my current sole upgrade path to the Ultra II EC at 500 dollars? Also, I have the phono section...

The short answer is yes, but there are options:

Exicon MOSFET Upgrade to line stage.

Exicon MOSFET Upgrade to phono stage.

$300 each or $500 for both.

Exicon MOSFET Upgrade to line stage plus replacing 6n1p tubes with 6cg7 tubes for $500.

However, I would recommend adding the solid state phono stage for $300 rather than ugrading your current phono stage.

Also, the exicon mosfet upgrade seems to minimize the differences between the 6n1p and 6cg7 tubes.

So, for a total of $600 (plus shipping) you can upgrade your line stage and add a new phono stage.

Line Stage
     Exicon MOSFET 300, my old tubes
     Exicon MOSFET 500 plus 6cg7 tubes
Phono Stage
     Exicon MOSFET 300, my old tubes
     Exicon MOSFET 500(?) plus 6cg7 tubes
Both
     Exicon MOSFET 500, my old tubes
     Exicon MOSFET 900(?) with new tubes

Or, Line and Phono 600
Line Stage
     Exicon MOSFET 300, my old tubes PLUS
Phono Stage
     Solid State 300, no tubes necessary.

Or, Line New Tubes and Phono 800
Line Stage
     Exicon MOSFET 500, new tubes(?)
Phono Stage
     Solid State 300, no tubes

Now that's gotta be the long answer!

To clarify:

Phono stage uses 12ax7 tubes.  No 6cg7 option.

If you do line and current phono section and with a 6cg7 line stage it woild be $800

If you do line and a solid state phono section and with a 6cg7 line stage it would also be $800.

Does it fit into the Hafler P500 chassis?  I think mine are at insight level? Insight +? And the version previous to that But that's maybe only the 4 that I recall, there are others, I have lost track of.  Pain to pull out and see stickers.  Noticeable/audible update?

The new Synergy circuits will not fit in the Hafler 500 or 600 chassis.

The Hafler chassis do not have room for the new Synergy circuit boards.

Sorry, but we have reached the limits to possible upgrades for these older chassis.
