Software for Mac Mini playback?
« on: 5 Sep 2010, 08:44 pm »
so I am kind of a total dunce when it comes to itunes and have never figured it out. I have a huge (2TB) library of music mainly in flac format (some shn that I will need to convert) and have been using Toast for play back. I have a mac mini hooked up via it's optical out to my home theater receiver. I just drop the tracks into Toast and play them. I don't need any library management stuff. For most of my hi rez audio, 24/96, I burn it onto DVDs for playback and have a different drive that I archive that stuff on. the only time things get squirrely is for playback of the 24/44.1 beatles tracks. I am not sure if toast is truncating them down to 16 bit, though they do sound great.

Any other suggestions for simple playback software or is Toast it?

thanks!

You can also try:

http://cogx.org/

I've had better luck with high-rez music with cog over play, since both are opensource projects I give them both a +1

You can play flac in itunes.. I prefer AIFF/ALAC since most portable devices can deal with it over FLAC.

Also http://www.benchmarkmedia.com/ is a great resource for setting up Macs and PCs for the best possible playback.
