Moho veneer
« on: 31 Aug 2010, 04:39 pm »
This is a question to Danny, Santiago, or any others out there.  Now that AV123 is officially defunct and I will never see LS centers or surrounds come to life it's time for some DIY.  I want to match the Moho veneer I have on my LS-6's for these projects but can't seem to find a local veneer/hardwood supplier that can get what I am asking.  I know Moho is AV123 slang for what I think is a tropical laurel tree (cordia alliodora?)but that still gets me no where.  Any info/help would be greatly appreciated - and thanks!

Great question!  I love me some Moho! (said in my best T.O. voice)  I would love to be able to find a ready supply of this.  That way I could attempt some DIY stuff of send to someone like Ruben for him to make things for me.

Moho was the worst selling finish it seemed like, but I really like it...I'm looking at a pair of X-Statiks in that finish as I type this.  I was always surprised it didn't catch on more, but it seems like lighter oak and darker Rosewood-ish colors just sold better.  There are lots of great sources for veneer on the web, though I can't name any specifically.  Jim Salk recommended one on his forum not too long ago.

Santiago posted in the blow everything else away thread. Shoot him a PM and see if you can get him to respond in this thread.

Hello, I've been traveling for the last two days with very limited access to internet. Please give me until tomorrow for me to check the inventory. Perhaps a surprise is in the works about Moho. :)
Thanks to all!!!

Awesome!! I can't wait to hear what you have to say Santi!!...I know others have expressed it, but in light of everything recently may I also say that I wish you and the folks that worked on the speakers at UniAudio all the best, and I am truly saddened by all that has happened.  It was your company's story, the photos of all that was changing and improving weekly, the new spray booth, the cnc table, the water coolers, etc that moved me to the point of saving for the LS's in the first place.  It's saddening to think of the talent those employees gained going to waste after so much was learned and achieved.  I wish you could have had the opportunity to complete my setup with your amazing cabinets.

I wish instead of moho, they would have offered a natural cherry. Everybody stains cherry red, and in its natural state, it is the nicest finish I have ever seen. My kitchen remodel I used a natural knotty cherry, and everyone compliments us on it. I thought I was going to really like the Moho, but the color to me, is a bit washed out. It doesn't have the depth of cherry, it's either a dark streak or a light streak. The reason a lot of people don't like natural cherry, is because it is rather pinkish when new. Even a few months in a room that gets natural light, you can see it getting much darker. And it just improves with age.

So was all this equipment sold off? Couldn't a company like GR research import cabinets, and offer turn-key kits as well as the component only ones? Even if it was consignment only, it seems like its better than just dismantling everything. Why can't anyone just take av123's place, take all their talent, take there customers and leave behind their alledged crooked leader. It had to be a profitable company; sure the economy sucks and most of us have to tighten our belts a little bit, but it seems like a there's a void so large that doesn't have to be there. Can't someone do what Mark was doing without doing what Mark was doing?

I also think why the rosewood was so popular, is because it looked real nice, but when the lights are down in a HT environment, it just fades to black, and isn't as distracting as a finish like moho. And the cherry and rosewood matched people's furnishings more so than the moho.

So tomorrow I'm picking up some natural Palisander LS6's. From pictures, I think it is the nicest finish, even though I know there were problems with the veneer. I'll let you know tomorrow.
